The North Farce

I wouldn't be surprised if more people go out and buy North Face gear after reading this thread, based on the amount of positive experiences listed. All because some dude thought he could get mad props for hating on the "poser" brand. Tom, get a South Butt shirt and call it good. Then people will know that you are actually one of the cool guys because you hate North Face.

+ 1 /;-) Tried to find a South Butt shirt through ebay and there weren't any up for sale. They are now worth more than a North Face shirt!!!

I wasn't looking for mad props I was just expressing my distaste for the company.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and that is my opinion.

If people think that I am either cool, or an asshole, based only on what they've read on this thread it is really kind of funny.
I would like to brandish a South Butt logo, but I think I'd prefer The North Farce instead. Also, one must read a thread in its entirety or it can be taken out of context.
Quoting myself:
"I was guilty of generalization and in doing so, find myself in error as is so often the case when one makes blanket generalizations.
I apologize for making those previous generalizations."

You guys are way off...The north face isn't even a real company.

I liked it years ago when North Face and Patagonia were limited to select climber goods that WE demanded and found of great use. Since then they've become fashion statements for the 'wanna-be' climber noobs and have spread their product line of clothes to all ends of the earth, AND their prices skyrocketed too. Not the same as the original gear and sincerity that's for sure.

Tom, North Face is no longer trendy. It is a 2nd rate brand at best now. Arc Terrorx and other brands have long ago eclipsed it in price and style. Which is why I buy North Face soft shells now and always on close outs or some fire sale. Point me to a generic soft shell and I would happily buy that. They don't exist. It's like all of the no-name brands don't understand what that is.

I don't condone the north face either. However, Carhartt is a quality outdoor brand. Those jackets keep me warm when ice climbing!!

Your joking right? not trendy, have you ever been to a college campus? You can find softshells at walmart, target, and kmart. Then there's brands like ll bean, eddie bauer (sans first ascent line), lands end, horny toad, cabelas, columbia, woolrich, rei line, oh and carhartt even makes softshells, all much less expensive than TNF and though not 'no name brands' they are certainly more generic.

Since ive never paid full price for any gear, am I allowed to wear what I want without being a poser?

grampa potate · · Unknown Hometown · Joined Dec 2011 · Points: 5

Actually I don't wear carhartt at all...just faded glory from walmart. Their pants are waterproof and the jackets are super breathable.

This pretty much says it

I'm pretty sure every campus in the west (I'm not sure about the East) is completely filled with said posers trying to be what they admire. Everybody wants to be a climber. I got so much shit for running cross country in high school.

Last year I was on a plane sitting next to a guy decked out in Arc' gear. I asked him if he had been out climbing much this year. He didn't even climb he just "liked the brand"

Tom, I agree the current North Face is complete shit with a brilliant marketing team.

At least Arc' Teryx still produces relative quality. I don't think I've ever seen a poser (swami, etc) wear anything by Westcomb

Even Costco is selling off-brand softshells now. Brands like "Black Diamond" (no not that black diamond) and some other brand I can't remember last time I was there.

i wonder if hard core skaters sit around bitching about non-skaters wearing DC shoes/clothing and vowing not to wear DC stuff because the posers are. i doubt it. they probably realize that whether or not you're a poser has nothing to do w/what you wear.

I hope they are sweat shop free.

Careful what you wish for, we wouldn't actually want all these people who buy/wear outdoor brands to not be posers, would we? And you think the crags are crowded now...

Awful lot of pitiful egos on this thread...

Don't exclude yourself from that statement, Rich. Ha ha ha!
