Does anyone know if the Poudre River is (easily) crossable at the Palace? It is usually fine by August, but there still seems to be a lot of water running through Fort Collins.

I'm also curious. I moved to FtC just as the water level got too high, so I'm excited to check this place out.

I climbed at Crystal Wall today and felt like the river cross might be doable now but would certainly be a risk. I just moved to fort collins so im not sure how the cross usually looks this time of year but i felt like there was still a lot of water moving at a pretty fast pace. I did look around briefly for a rock hop acroos and didn't see anything. i'd say its about 50/50 right now depending on the risk your willing to take. Those odds weren't good enough for me and my gear.

do yourself a favor and wait a week or two more. the river has been dropping fast, however its still above what it normally is this time of year. it didn't drop below the 3 ft mark till august 5th. when its around the 1.5 ft mark or lower, it'll be a lot safer.

if you want to keep an eye on the water levels, heres the place to check.

jonesing for the Palace huh Dusty?

I agree with MtnNut, prob better to wait a week or two.
But if you take a walking stick and diagonal across the sandbar,
you should be fine. life jacket?

wait almost forgot........yer gonna die!!

FYI there are other areas up canyon that get very little traffic,
and are perfect this time of year...palace sounds sweaty.

Take this from someone who loves to climb at the Palace. It's even in my profile as favorite places to climb. So here it is...

The Palace SUCKS during the summer and early fall.

Even if you were to cross the river (don't know how high it is right now being in Tennessee) it would be a sweat fest. You need to wait until cooler temperatures to get the full experience. Otherwise you'll get a bad opinion of it right off the bat and not wanna come back, and it can be a great local crag to frequent when travel isn't an option. But I wouldn't try and cross the river. In a month or so the river will be shin height in most places. Just wait.

I know, right? The missus and I only had a few early morning hours and thought it would be fun to get a few pitches in. I wouldn't dare climb at the palace after 9 am in the summertime.

Thanks for the river update.

so, i know a few people have crossed the river successfully and climbed over in the palace in the last week or so. the river is almost to 1.5' mark, so id say be careful, but its doable now.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
