Why don't I preface my opinions by saying...I live in Plymouth, NH and as a North Conway local....(Just saying)And Yes...the climbers here are super nice but East Coast is still uptight and often about the dumbest shit...like "low ball bouldering" and how it's not legitimate but 20ft "trad" lines are..huh!? Hey man, Lee's definitely a Rumney local. |

Adam Winters wrote:So to be a Rumney local you have to live in the town of Rumney? "Local" can also refer to the region, not just the town. Well...I guess it depends on how you define the word. What is the "checklist" to define "local"? I don't have any firm opinion on that. |

JSH wrote: I think the relevant idea here is that of a *climbing* local. For that, it seems to be widely held that a local is someone who knows the (climbing) area very, very well and who is emotionally vested in the area. Locals have been climbing there for a while and will continue as long as they live. Locals know the history of the area, and its customs and ethics. They're well-connected personally, probably on a first-name basis in the climbing shop. It's the locals who replace old tat and unsafe hardware, out of love for an area. It's the locals who maintain trails and seek out new routes and areas just to share. This is, of course, in contrast to the typical uptight (see? not a tangent!) New England definition of local, by which your grandfather had to have been the mayor or somesuch. Otherwise you're just a newcomer. Check the contributions on his page - Lee is about as local as one can be to Rumney, and the area is better for him. I'd agree |

Rumney locals who do not live within 30 miles of the place - members of 'Team Tough' (you know who you are). I salute you for all you have contributed to the place and your continuing involvement. And, yes, I do think they are uptight, but strictly limited to the quality and cleanliness of the many routes they have put up and/or equipped over the years. Many, many thanks! |

I do shit pebbles, but it has nothing to do with religion. It's a medical condition, it's personal, and I don't want to talk about it. |
