Gunks Camping Question

Will be arriving late on a Friday and staying through Sunday. Last visit to the Gunk's was over 15 years ago. Any improvements to Camp Slim, and what are the chances of finding space there that late? Any other recommendations? Would prefer a place to have a fire and don't mind paying a bit. Suggestions?

I haven't been there since 2000, but am from NY and used to climb there a lot. Slime will probably be jammed as it was whenever I was there. There is no more parking along the road and I don't think it "opens" now till 8am. Weekend day pass is something like $15 or $17!! It's more highly regulated than the last time you (or I) were there. There used to be a spot to camp by the hairpin turn, but that's gone too. Still GREAT climbing though!!! Check out......

Camp Slime is still pretty basic. You're probably not going to get a spot if you arrive late.

You can try the DEC Multiple Use Area off of 299. It's free, but super basic. This year they limited camping to one side of the road only (the side with the parking area, on the L if you are heading to the cliffs from New Paltz).

If you're willing to pay a little bit, I would recommend Creek View Campsite in Rosendale. It's farther from the cliffs, but it is quiet, clean, and has bathroom/shower facilities. Tent camping is $10/person/night. www.creekviewcampsite.com

Just to add the equation, I've never had a problem finding a spot at Slime even arriving late Friday night with a beautiful weekend ahead. However, the last spots usually require creativity and willingness to sleep at an angle.

My last time at Slime I had a large tree branch fall on top of me in the middle of the night. Bruised ribs, I thought I was being beaten by a crowbar. And yes, the ground was not close to level.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
