I was looking at this one over the Petzl because it has a locking blade...

60 grams I think .

I have a knife on my harness. Mine is a gerber as well. The only advice i would give is get one with a partial serrated edge. It will be much more useful if you actually have to cut something.

Yeah, but its a gerber. I don't like their blades.
I carry a leatherman skeletool with me when I feel necessary. Locking, partially serrated, and the blade lasts forever. Plus, bottle opener for the post climb Schlitz.

I have the skeletool as well. Agreed much better blade. I like the biner loop for my harness, but the skeletool is always with me when i'm off the wall

after slicing my thumb wide open while chalking up (the little metal part that kept it closed when on the biner broke), i opted for a safer blade alternative. a little pricey, but well worth it. this little benchmade will lock the blade both open & closed, so it can't pop open & surprise you.

I carry this clipped to my harness:
buckknives.com/index.cfm?ev…;productID=2948

It is cheap, has a locking blade so you cannot accidentally cut something, and it is sharp as hell... I have easily cut nests of webbing... and it even has a beer bottle opener to boot, and only 25 grams. They used to sell them at REI, but I don't think they carry them anymore... goes for about $12 online.

I carry a larger knife in my pack on trips, but for something light and cheap and safe to clip to your harness, I haven't found anything better.

I'm a fan of rescue hooks.

22g, built in biner, super sharp blade that slices through all kinds of stuff very easily. You can't make a sawing motion with it, but the sharpness and angle of the cutting surface make up for it.

Spyderco Ladybug serrated is in my chalkbag pocket. Ample, awesome, locking and light. (Discontinued?) Two other folks I've randomly climbed with have the same one on their harnesses. (Mine cost $12.00 at the showroom.)

I climb with and love the Buck Redpoint Knife.

1) it locks open and closed

2) it has a big carabiner attachment point

3) it has a rubberized handle that feels great

4) It has partial serrations and is very sharp and durable. I once had to use it to clean a nut when I left my nuttool with my partner and it is still razor sharp.

Hope you find something that works!

My favorite is the Trango Shark Nut tool - multi-purpose, locking blade, light, and cuts ropes and slings great.

+1 until my partner decided to open tuna with it. Now the blade is crap.

+1, this is what I carry on my harness as well. The Shark tool I felt bound up on the carabiner too much, but it is nice having a two-in-one. The piranha is smaller, less bulky, and less likely to snag so I stopped using the Shark.

I used to have this (about the size of your pinky finger)

but I lost it.

Being from Texas, I thought everyone carried these:

+1 for the Spyderco Ladybug. After all, Spyderco is what the guides carried in Cliffhanger so it must be good.

Once I pulled my harness out of my pack and noticed the blade was half open. Kind of disconcerting so now I tape my blade closed.

Given that I've actually needed to use it for actual climbing use exactly once in the past 5 years, I wouldn't bother carrying anything bigger on my harness.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
