Has anyone been to the sports park lately? What are the conditions of the creek, is it cross-able, how deep? Trying to figure out not only if I need spare clothing but if my dog can make it across. thanks.

The creek is running pretty hard right now. It went over the top of Barker Dam a few days ago. I suppose it is technically still crossable, but I'd expect it's pretty dangerous/exciting.

i would definitely advise against it. the creek is running pretty strong right now.

I crossed it about 7 days ago and it was doable. My friend was even able to semi-easily carry his dog across with him. But...that was 7 days ago...I imagine it is running much stronger now. I'd say its do-able but it's gonna be tough to do.

Btw, the most recent report is 450cfs at Broadway in Boulder. Apparently the dam spilled over on Wednesday.

Guess the sports park is out. Other than the watermark and avalon do any of you have other suggestions for really easy sport? I am taking a few beginners out on Saturday and was trying to find a place with good routes below 5.9.

Cascades Crag has a a few lower rated sport routes that might be good for beginners (a bit over bolted...), Solaris also has a few really fun lines in the 5.7-5.9 region. Both have access with tyroles.

Tina,

Check out The Riviera in BC.

Went past it today. Spicy at best, have a couple heaving lines at worst. Wouldn't recommend it.

you could try Highwire Crag in Clear Creek Canyon

If your friend really cared about his dog, he'd leave it at home, especially with the creek raging like this. Dogs are less stressed alone, and it's selfish of an owner to take their dog into such dicey conditions. I was at Avalon last weekend and two people brought their dogs across on the tyrolean. One was yelping loudly at the First Tier because of the stress. One slip, and that dog is a goner... Lots of threads here about dogs and crags.

That said, for easy sport in the shade you could try Sherwood Forest, Solaris, Nip and Tuck, or Avalon Middle Wall. Best of luck!

Hansel is right about the dog. whatever you do, don't let your dog try to swim across right now, the creek is completely ripping. i went fishing on it last night, and there were literally no fishing holes, it is 100% brutal whitewater then entire way.

i used to have a black lab that was a mfkn monster of a swimmer. we would take him kayaking and he would swim long sections of class 2 and 3 water. i've never seen another dog that could swim like he could.

anyway, me, a buddy, and the beast went to cob rock when the water was pretty high. i was tyroleaning across when the beast started swimming across. he started getting swept downstream. there is a mfkr of a waterfall downstream, absolutely nasty. luckily the beast got a hold of a rock and was clinging for dear life, just above the waterfall. i got off the tyrolean as quick as possible, got out on arock and grabbed him by the scruff of his neck, and heaved with all my (admittedly not very much) might, and got him onto the shore.

at the end of the day, instead of going back across the stream, we did a hellish bushwhack downstream for quite a ways until we got to a bridge.

please, learn from my poor judgement and don't let a dog try to swim across the creek right now.

I wouldn't. There are way-better crags anyway. Avalon has a tyrolean that will keep you dry. Dream Canyon was beautiful yesterday.

I agree with Paul, the Tax Park can slob on my knob.

Yea and some dogs just don't understand how fast or dangerous the water is. My less than genius pup almost took a dirt nap on Mt.Massive running into a creek that he then couldn't get out of. Luckily I was right there and ripped him out of the water by the handle of his dog pack before he went over a waterfall.

+1 on The Riviera. It has a whole bunch of moderates that are bolted nice and tight. Best part is there's no creek to cross!! Good in the early morning and evening, but tends to bake throughout the day.

Just wanted to say thanks, the Riveria was a great spot.

Friend can't leave his dog at home b/c he doesn't have a home. The dog has a harness and was clipped in to the rope line. Also, the dog loves doing shit like that. As soon as she realized we were leaving the crag she sprinted down to the creek just waiting to be carried across.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
