Hey, I'm new to the south, just moved to MS from CA. Going to head out to Horse Pens 40 this coming weekend. Shoot me a message if you're looking for a partner! Cheers!

I'm sure you wont have any trouble finding somebody to boulder with when you get there too. Its the south for god sakes...offer most folks at HP40 a shot of whiskey and you got a bouldering partner for the whole trip;) Take a good lantern and headlamp for better sending conditions at night too.

Ha ha, thanks Brad! Yep, I've been smothered with southern hospitality since I got here...I'm sure I won't have trouble finding some folks, just thought I'd cover my bases just in case. Can't wait to check out Horse Pens!

You'll love it. You have to meet Mike Schultz, great guy with a lot of history to tell.

Alright, great....weather forecast looks like thunderstorms this weekend. I'll probably try and go out the following weekend and catch the bluegrass fest. Brad, do camping spots fill up fast for that? Cheers, thanks! (ha ha, I guess that can be addressed to either Brad)

I am wondering how long the southern sandstone takes to dry. If I decide to visit this week to boulder, are there any spots that will stay dry?

Most of the rock @ HP dries out fairly quick. When are you planning to climb?

I'm actually planning on heading up this weekend for the bluegrass fest that is happening. I got thwarted by the weather last weekend, but now I'm just going to go no matter what since each weekend has been storms!! Arg! Says chances of thunderstorms each day are 30-40%. Are there any caves or protected areas there?

No caves that I am aware of. Also, HP climbing isn't steep, so no large roofs that will stay dry.
If you're just looking for some place to get out of the rain, there is a large pavillion @ HP where you can stay dry.
Latest forecast has Fri evening and Sat morning dry, so maybe you will get lucky!

Forecasts, in the Spring and Summer, often reflect these levels of rain likelihood with little in the way of results or passing sprinkles. On the other hand, it might rain heavily all day. It's really a crap-shoot in the Spring and Summer in the SE...just gamble and chase dry rock. Granted, HP40 isn't the place to do it, but most areas will have something dry in all but a significant or long-lived soaker.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
