2011 climbing goals

In 2011 I want to:

-Do a bunch more alpine climbing in the Sierra, including some early season ascents so I can play in the snow.

-Climb all the stuff in Yosemite that I wanted to do last year but didn't get to, including the Steck-Salathe, YPB Direct, Lost Arrow Chimney, and hopefully my first bigwall.

-In the summer, take a roadtrip up to Canada, climbing at the North Cascades, Squamish, and the Bugaboos.

-Hopefully a trip to El Potrero for Christmas.

-Climb at at least 5 places that I've never been to before.

-And as always, avoid getting injured or doing anything stupid.

Keep on the No Smoking thing while not gaining any weight. Work out about 3 times a week. Then maybe I'll be able to spread my Mom's and my Sisters ashes at the Monastery and do a few very moderate climbs when I am there. That; and support my climbing partner with his goals. Hopefully get a job at a golf course mowing the grass and anything else they want me to do. Maybe lead a 5.9+ outside. Not too lofty goals, but I've been climbing for years and have no desire to really push it. Just have fun....imagine that.

Thoroughly explore the climbing in my new home of northern AZ, including many trips to Zion, RR, and southern Utah.

Develop a regular campus board routine.

Become a strong sport climber and have that contribute to long hard adventure routes.

better start working that holiday gut off hard cor! although, a gut can keep you warm when you are spooning the englemeister for a few days, a couple thousand feet off the deck!

Heal 100% from my achilles injury, hoping not to blow up like a blimp and climb as much as I can once I can start excercising my calf again and put body weight on it which won't be till March-ish.

thanks Matt!
slim, i know, it is a hard thing to deal with...
do i want to be my fittest ever, and freeze my ass off cuz i
got no fat...or keep a lil beer fat in there to keep me warm!

i should probably just keep training hard, and drinking as
much beer as possible! it has seemed to work for the past
20 years of climbing, why change now?? ;D

Stop calling my boyfriend a fag because he only likes to Boulder.

Lead 5.10 slab again. I've got a couple picked out in the S. Platte....

continue challenging myself to realize what I am fully capable of.

I would like to go back to the T-Wall, climb some desert towers, get more comfortable climbing above gear (as long as it's good gear,) and ummmmm....more consistently break into climbing 5.12s as Rumney (not like the number matters, but the idea of challenging myself with something difficult does.)

OK. Happy 2011. Glad to be all psyched up just in time for this cold and snow, ahhhh. Patience. :)

slim wrote:charles, i do it mostly in the gym as it is easy to get a bunch in one session. i go up and whip onto one of the last 2 bolts. at first i would look down and make sure my belayer is paying attention, etc. now i am getting to where i am comfortable taking pretty big falls, say with the bolt a couple feet below my feet, without too much preparation. i haven't been outside much lately, but i did get in a few slab falls, and i also took a fall onto an rp that i knew was really bad (but backed up). the RP held for a couple seconds but then pulled out. mostly i am getting over the fear of not being in control, more than anything.

That's kinda crazy. I know its important and all that but... I guess taking slab falls is a learned skill. I mean, how to do it without really hurting yourself. My ankle will never be the same from one I took a few years ago. Falling on gear is a big mental leap for me. I've done my share of it but not on purpose. That takes some serious premeditation.
Your method has serious merit.

Road Trips to new, to me climbing areas. More time on moderate trad with my son, while I still send harder than he does.

yo tenesmus, you should do it too. we could go out and try to get a book deal and make millions (of pesos, or other currencies where a million is like $27). in all seriousness though, my goal is basically to climb a lot more relaxed above gear. i feel like i have good judgement about when something is a bit hairy, but don't have the ability to really climb relaxed when it isn't hairy.

It's nearly mid September and I just re-read the goals I had for 2011 that I came up with in January. Sadly I am sucking big time in regards to almost every goal I stated here. I have gotten out of my home crag a few times and have a couple more trips planned, but everything else has been a wash. How is everyone else doing?

I had the goal of doing 52 climbs at or near my limit and am 33. I have a ways to go but am looking pretty good with the fall trips coming up.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
