Human spine found near Prince of Darkness

We stopped at pitch 10 on DOWT. All the action was a few hundred feet higher. I've never been on top, but I think it's easy 5th and 4th class up there.

Interesting, I didn't realize it was so high on the wall. I think that area is a bunch of easy 5th, 4th class, but then a headwall that leads to the false summitt of Black Velvet. In that case it could be a hiker who fell from the false summitt area? Who knows, will be interesting to hear what they find out.

inaccessible, sparsely populated, far away, etc.

I realize that for the vast majority of people popping tokens into slot machines that BVC is remote, but for the people who use it on a regular basis, the approach is reasonable (the hardest part being the final uphill) and the area is frequented by quite a few people on a daily basis. My point is that these remains weren't not discovered because the remoteness of the area kept people away.

I got the impression they (the stories) were suggesting the remains hadn't been found due to the remoteness of the area, which, when one considers how many climbers access this area on a regular basis, isn't the case at all.

I realize that the average TV talking head has about as much understanding of climbing as a turnip but the reports are contradictory and confusing. It sounds as if the spine was found near the base trail and the rest of the remains were substantially higher on the wall. Curiouser and curiouser.

A non human spine wearing a shirt?
Skull, ribs and other bones found inside clothing?

Doesn't make sense. What desert animals wear clothes?

Something is rotten in Denmark.

Now we're back into the human category, it looks like...
Police Say Red Rock Remains Were Human
It sure would be nice if the authorities would get there act together... And the story gets a little more interesting...

I'm driving through Vegas and planned to do Sunday in BVC. Does anyone know if there are any access issues getting in there?

There were no access issues last weekend , however it is supposed to be cold and rainy this weekend .

This is a quote from Channel 8's website:

"LAS VEGAS -- There has been some confusion about whether remains found at Red Rock Canyon are actually human. It turns out they are human.

Early Tuesday, the coroner's office said the remains were not human after all, but Las Vegas police say two sets of remains were found in the area that day and one of those set was human.

The remains found near Black Velvet Canyon are human, while a separate set found by a rancher near Bonnie Springs were not human."

Soooo......

Yeah...it's back to being human remains now. My guess is that it's a suicide that nobody came across until now. I know I've heard Metro SAR talk about how a lot of their calls deal with suicide body recoveries out at Red Rock.

I'd be interested to know if it was in fact "hikers" that found the spine. With how cold it was last week and that area being mostly in the shade I would think hikers would be more likely. It's also confusing though that it was found in an area that was very steep an seemingly only accessible to climbers.

You might be surprised at the amount of hiking that goes on in RR in areas seemingly only accessible to climbers.

Wow...I really did not expect that. I'm glad that his family has some closure after all that time.
