Crossfit is an athletic training program. People get hurt because they don't do things (like olympic lifts) correctly. If you focus on the forms, have good coaching, and are smart, you won't get hurt. Don't forget to scale your workouts too. But, this is athletic training, and athletes get injured.....Crossfit isn't for everyone. One thing's for sure, you won't see anyone in a box doing bicep curls.
I find crossfit to be a good balance to round out fitness and imbalances. I don't have any trouble recovering after carrying a big pack for a few miles. It is great for general fitness training and conditioning. It may improve your climbing ability, but real climbing is the best way to improve your climbing.
If you're going to do it, do it at a box. Don't just follow the main site, that could be a recipe for disaster.
Both Steve House and Kelly Cordes use circuit type workouts at certain times (often preceeding a trip to the big mountains) but seem to prefer trail-running, scrambling, and climbing a lot to maintain their sport specific fitness and overall fitness. House posted some great stuff on his training blog regarding LSD Hours that I thought was really interesting.
Kevin- Ironic that you just posted that video. I am looking to do some Alpine climbing this summer but am curious how to balance that with maintaining my current bouldering level (which is my main focus) so I can come back fitter, lighter and stronger in the fall.
The link you posted has a lot of good resources. Thanks.
Hey if you live in Colorado Springs and are looking into Crossfit check us out at crossfitsoco.com
We are located at 522 1/2 South Tejon just behind McCabes and Coffee Exchange. We were out growing City Rock and moved to a larger location. Our instructors include Olympians in Olympic lifting and Gymnastics to make sure you get your technique right and don't get hurt!
We'd love to have climbers check us out! The first week is free and then you decide if it's for you.
Also check out Will Gadd's article in Explore Magazine this month about Crossfit it's really good. Explore is a Canadian magazine so it might be harder to find down here.
Erik you could even get a Marg as soon the workout was over at South Side Johnnys or McCabes....
