Destination Vegas Baby! We were planning on breaking our road trip to Vegas into 2 days of driving (from Denver). Does anybody know of a good cragging and camping spot anywhere close to half way? I was thinking of Escalante near Grand Junction but it isn't very close to half way.

Climbing/camping would have to be fairly close to the interstate since we wouldn't have a lot of time to wander around or do approach hikes.

BTW, for Thanksgiving week we scored hotel rooms for $25 a night. Almost as cheap as camping!

there is a bunch of stuff in the san rafael swell. the buckhorn wash is a bit of a drive but has great camping and indian creek style cragging. there are also a bunch of towers nearby with good camping. check out swaseyland, the area around worth the view spire, and the area around the mother goose. all are on mountainproject

+1 on what Andrew said. You can also check out the Eastern reef slabs in the San Rafael Swell not to far off the interstate and good primitive camping.

My vote is for the Swell too. Great camping and climbing. Paul Ross could recommend some routes for you guys too if you wanted to get a climb or 2 in. You guys would enjoy 1000' of fun.

Thanks Tracy and Robert. I will certainly look into the Swell.

Andrew, I might pick your brain on Tuesday at the Beer Night.

We'll be there as well! Which hotel is that, I hate the BLM campsite... I was also thinking of checking out the Red Rock casino 'cuz it's got decent sushi.

I usually stop in Flagstaff, not sure how that would work out for a drive from Denver though. The Hotel Monte Vista is funky and cool, especially if you like dive bars after a day of climbing. It costs about the same the Generic Lodge.

Stratoshpere, Baby!

Includes a 2-fer-1 all day ride ticket. Big Shot, Baby!

I think the GF had a special deal on Hotels.com or something.

Flag is a little off the Denver route.

Not sure if its in arches park or not, but you don't have to drive through the normal entrance to get there. Its just off I-70 and a little ways east of the swell. Be sure to check out the route 'golden child' if you're there. It ain't in the route DB but one of the desert rock guidebooks has it.

Just an update on this. 1/2 way to Vegas (from Denver) is a great place called Goblin Valley State Park. Luxury car camping in a really cool place. Nice showers. I don't think there is much climbing but there are some excellent slots nearby. $16 to camp, but don't reserve online like I did 'cause they hit you up for an $8 fee. Just get the phone # and call for a reservation.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
