Hi all, just wanted to post an update here for the sake of awareness. I have been able to put more time into this and have 'revived' several contacts regarding sponsorships and donations. So far, we are still in the hole quite a bit for making the t-shirts a reality but i'm keeping the faith that it will come through in the end. Please keep the rsvp's coming as that helps us to get a target figure locked in for the "free" t-shirts (for participants).

As many of you have seen or heard, the dates were pushed back to allow Beanfest to take place last weekend (one killer Beanfest, btw). There is a chance the cleanup may get pushed back a 2nd time to allow more time for a pending Access Fund grant. The AF grant could be the silver bullet to put this thing into full operation so i'm willing to hold off if required. So heads up, once again, we may be polling again for input on dates if a postponement comes to pass.

We will be receiving some swag items for raffle. This will be a good fundraiser though I was trying to get the majority of the event funded from sources other than the climbing community. That being said, I promise to continue pursuing options that don't rely on squeezing $$ out of the people actually contributing their time for the cleanup.

Brigette has had some great ideas, not the least of which were a pancake breakfast (my personal fav), and a sign-up sheet at Beanfest. I have her to wholeheartedly thank for keeping me inspired and on on-track through all the "sorry, not this year" responses to requests for help/donations.

Additionally, we have been offered use of the cabins to base operations out of and, i would assume, lodging/refreshments/meals should we choose to move the cleanup to the East Stronghold. I am elated over this offer and would like to put the idea of moving the event to that side out for consideration. There will not be as much to climb over there due to the closures however quite a few areas will be in the sun early (lebowski, zappa, batline, wasteland, oot/ood, etc). I, personally, believe we will be contributing a huge amount to the Stronghold regardless of what side we hold the event on. The cabins, however, would be really nice. =)

That's all for the time being, but please do post feelings and comments.

Here is the t-shirt design; the back will be finalized once all the sponsors are determined.

This is very cool. I'll be there, with friends. Pretty much any date in dec. should work for me.

Let's keep it Dec 12-13. I'll be there. Shiloh, carpool again?

We'll keep the 12th and 13th, even if it's a smaller version than the one we'll do next year. I've got commitments from too many people to be able to change it now without appearing flakier than my mom's pie crust. Mmmmm pie. :)

Hey Daryl,
If it's not pushed back past the 19th of Dec you can count me in. Climbing down there's amazing so giving up a day to keep the place up is the least I can do. Great T-shirt by the way.

Closures don't start until Feb 30th. So East side would be a great option if we do it before then.

I wish the closure didn't start until February 30!

Daryl and Brigette -

I won a case of an energy drink called Xyience. I really don't need it, and if you guys want it I can donate it for the volunteers that need a little pick-me-up.

As for the Roundup, will there be areas closer to the road that will need work? If I come I will likely be bringing two little ones, who would be happy to help pick up trash, but hiking them up towards one of the domes would be a bit rough....

We're on!

8:00 Saturday, December 12, Isle of You campground. Potluck dinner Saturday, and pancake breakfast Sunday.

Daryl's got tons of great gear for door prizes!

Please PM me for more info and to RSVP. If you can bring a side dish to share Saturday night, that'd be awesome.

See you there!

Joe: bring the little ones; there will definitely be easily-accessible areas for you to work.

Hi everyone,
Just got confirmation from the USFS that they'll be providing all the trash bags as well as trailer drop off and pick up service. Also, the Douglas district ranger has personally passed on his appreciation for our efforts. They are thrilled that we are taking this on. I can't emphasize enough the good visibility this is getting between the recreation managers and USFS departments down here. The horseback riders and OHV users that were onboard more or less dropped out so it's just us [climbers] now.

Unfortunately, the free t-shirts will not be possible this time around. We simply didn't get the financial backing required to make that a reality.

Just to reiterate, we're putting together a dinner for Saturday (either fried turkeys done on location or turkey gumbo - TBD), and a pancake breakfast. Brigette is working the beer issue but i have limited optimism that this is going to pass. I would plan for byob until we hear otherwise on Brigette's efforts on the liquid bread (AKA beer). Since the dinner is mainly going to be a main course sort of thing, if anyone could provide a side such as mashed potatoes or bread, that would be great.

As mentioned, we have some goodies to give out. We'll probably do a Most Trash Collected thing and have goodies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes and possibly more. We'll be raffling off a pair of Evolv climbing or approach shoes (winner's choice) that Evolv graciously donated and possibly giving another pair away at the event. Collections boxes will be at Rocks and Ropes and possibly at Summit Hut as well (approval pending).

The AccessFund is onboard and is supporting us under the Adopt-a-Crag program they run. Since we don't have a tax exempt status, we are not officially eligible for a grant (yet), but they did send a support box with Nalgene bottles and Cliff bars.

That's all for now; please spread the word to all your non-MP.com friends. Also, if you haven't already done so, please drop a message on the forum here with an expected headcount for all attending in your group if you could. It would help us allot for planning purposes.

And one more thing..., we'll be using FRS radios to communicate throughout the Stronghold during the event. If you have access to a pair of hand-held radios that operate on the family radio service channels, please bring them if you can. This will help us with trash bag pickup spots, safety, etc. Of course, the bigger the range, the better.

Thanks again everyone!!

Tradster - I'm in! Lets break this thing down brah!
Bridgette - Always a pleasure - I'll bring a bottle of something
to appease those with a taste for the dog...
Cant wait - this will be two oppurtunities to give back in a month period... Rackin up the karma points - maybe Santa will bring me a new
rope for Christmas???

Daryl Allan · · Sierra Vista, AZ · Joined Sep 2006 · Points: 1,041

Okay gang, Cajun fried turkeys it is! I'm going to bring two on ice, injected and ready to go and fry them as needed to support however many show up. Oh, y'all didn't know i was a coon-ass, eh? Well, turkey fryers are a standard issue item when you get your drivers license issued where i come from, ;).

Aside from that, we collected some more swag items from Summit Hut for door prizes and have been working out the kinks in the overall operation.

A couple things though, please. I know i asked earlier about rsvp'ing if you haven't already but could i ask that everyone that's coming to shoot myself or Brigette a PM with how many you plan on bringing out in your group? That is, regardless of if you have or haven't already. The more accurate a number we know how to predict for, the better we can plan for drinks, food, etc.

We just received a very generous grant from Rocks and Ropes. If you happen to be in there, thank the management, staff and/or Luke for their selfless generosity. Same goes for Summit Hut. They donated some giveaway goodies to help us out; just another reason for us to try and keep our purchases local here to support local businesses. (**Okay, i'm off the soapbox)

Aside from praying for warm/dry weather, i think that does it for now. Believe me, i know how unappealing cleaning up other people's trash can be but, as Brigette stated, this is a great opportunity to give back and get recognition for it in the process.

Oh, and in case it wasn't clear before, ** DO bring your climbing gear**. We don't plan on cleaning up trash the whole time we're out there. =)

MichaelClimbs wrote:Ready to party. I there a check list for Keg, Firewood, and trash bags??

Michael, trash bags are covered - thanks! The USFS is providing them as well as the trash trailer to haul everything to the dump. The keg situation is up in the air but i wouldn't count on it. I would plan for a BYOB situation for now. We don't have any offers to bring firewood so that is one thing we need.

So here's a checklist of sorts for needed items if anyone feels up to bringing them:
BYOB
Tables (big folding kind)
Gas stoves
Firewood
Side dishes (?)
-mashed potatoes
-cranberries
-sweet potato
-bread
FRS radios (walkie talkies)
Gloves (for trash pickup)
Pickup Sticks/poles (if you have access to them)(thanks Christian, for the idea)

AGENDA:
The idea is to break out the campgrounds and campsites into 'areas' that we can let people take for action. The USFS Cochise recreation managers office has offered to point out some hot spots for us to target. As areas are done, we can mark them off[done] and that group can jump on another one.

I have a couple guys bringing their quads out to 'shuttle' people, supplies and trash bags around to the different areas during the event.

I'm planning on being there NLT 7am to meet the USFS guys. Hopefully by 0830, we will have enough people and direction to start turning teams loose. Clean for a few hours or up until around 1pm or so. We'll call everyone back that hasn't returned to rally up the refuse, pile it up and do a photo shoot in front of it. After that and once we have everyone accounted for, i'll be starting dinner (late lunch).

Oh Boy. Weather.

Might have to bring my rain jacket, big tarp, whiskey, and firewood.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
