Please, for the love of god, clean off your Tick marks when you are finished. This mainly applies to Rumney, and I have nothing wrong with the use of tick marks. But leaving them there almost ensures they'll be there for a while since Schist is so porous, and alot of the holds don't get wet. It's gotten to the point of absurdity when the biggest jug on a 5.9 is ticked, and when there is literally a 2 foot dashed tick mark arrow on the final jug of Apocalypse.
Again, no qualms with using tick marks, just clean up after yourself, because they DO degrade others experiences. Thanks for putting up with my rant.

Do you feel better now? I hope so, and I don't mean that in a dick way at all.

I appreciate the need to vent, but this post is like posting "All you litterers pick up your crap!" Its a right on reaction to an irresponsible act, but, rather ineffective.

I agree with you. On a philosophical level, I don't find tic marks a problem as long as they're cleaned up. I think tics are over used.

But, the best I have to say to yuo is ,"good luck!"

Do you?
Isn't your post, concerning his, exactly the same thing you are giving him a hard time about?

Hey Evan,
I do feel better! That's the point of a rant. In all seriousness, i just think some people don't realize that others don't appreciate being told where a hold is. Blissful ignorance, I don't blame them if that's the problem. But hopefully now they'll know

I respect your opinion for sure but i LOVE tick marks (at least at Rumney anyway)... I know it makes me a bad person but i cant help it... You all should all listen to E and clean em off so ill have to work harder...

Lee, I've heard every time you tick a kitten dies. But I still don't think you're a bad person....

hehe i brush off tick marks when i lower off stuff all the time. i've never had to tick anything at rumney.. though my projects don't involve sneaky holds..

i brush off egg mcmeadows hidden hold as much as i can.. it's like the only tricky part of the route.. suck it up lol

my friend likes to tick useless holds on things that generally get ticked and erase the good ones.. don't trust every tick mark you see :)

Dud, these freaking dick marks and those that create them are starting to get a bit out of control...
...they're starting to cover many of the classic 8 and 9 trad routes in Eldorado Canyon- help!! I'm so confused about which of the many chalked holds to grap now?

Whatever Jay has to say is law and the rest of you whined out pickle sniffers should pump the brakes!

E thatcher, I have never heard of a 5.13 climber bitching about tick marks at a TOTALLY 5.13 area. That I know of, Rumney is a God-Blessed 5.13 tick fest. I can't wait to visit, tick-marks or no..

Damn...Allright, a coupla beers. Jay is still the final word, finally, period, over, end of story, no mas, mucho endo, finis, ola'!

XOXO

It wasn't meant to give him a hard time at all. It's just one of those futile hopes.

ALso, I think that some of what is benig complained about is chalk build up from heavy traffic. Overchalking is a different problem than tics.

Sorry if the tone came off wrong.

I'm not sure I buy the argument that schist being marginally more porous than other rock types means that the tick marks will stay on the rock face longer. I think a more complex formula should be hypothesized. Perhaps something like:

Tc=[(Rf/Rc)*S)]/P

where:

T(c)=Tick mark coefficient
Rf=Rain frequency
Rc=Rain angle coefficient (dependent on average wind direction and wind speed for the area)
S=Slope of the rock face
P=Porosity

I never said I was a 5.13 climber, and for all i know those who climb 5.13 could view this differently on those routes, And Rumney's got waaaaay more then just 5.13's. And Evan, nothing can really be done about over chalked holds, it's a bummer. I am referring to tick marks directly, not over chalked holds

i know of many routes at rumney where following the standard ticks will get you sandbagged hard... The Caged (5.12d) comes to mind i think i avoided 463(463=4ish) holds with huge ticks on them when i did that route... Everyone there has chalk not everyone understands climbing :)

If:

Rf = Minutes of Rain/10080 Minutes/week
R/c = Angle of Rain
S = Angle of Face
P = grams of chalk/ cm2

Canceling out units leaves us with:

Tc = cm2 / (10080 x grams of chalk)

I would like to add a chalking frequency factor to clean up our constant.

The equation accounts for removal of chalk but does not account for adding of chalk between rainfall occurrences.

Cr = Chalking rate = (g/cm2 )-1 of chalk added per person

This will clean up our Constant leaving out units completely.

Tc= ((Rf/Rc)*S*Cr)/P

Yeah!

They grow up and become cats. That's the main problem.

Someone already used the phrase "yak-dick" in a thread the other day... how far behind could the pencil/eraser jokes be?
