What, are we trying to win the lame pix contest?

All right, y'all...

How about discussing how things ought to work with photo ratings and display on the front page?

I, for one, would like to see:

1. Inability to rate your own photos (just like youtube won't let you give stars to your own videos).

2. No ratings from anonymous users.

One solution would be to delete this photo. Maybe a bit controversial, but it would spare us all from accidentally looking at it.

I thought I read that if you rate a picture as POOR, then it will not be displayed on the homepage?

How it works now...

  • If a photo has ANY poor votes, it will not appear on the homepage
  • Anonymous users cannot vote
  • The poster CAN vote (probably a bad idea)

So if you don't think a photo is homepage worthy, nail it with one bad vote.

This is a little off topic, but one of my photos was deleted by an administrator and THEN I was told about it (I'm not saying that's what you would do in this particular case with the buttshot photo, because there's no real legitimate reason to delete this photo, I'm just airing my grievances here). It was a picture of my car with one of the old MP stickers/logos visible. It was deleted and then I got an email saying that it had been deleted. I was pretty pissed. Luckily it was a photo that I had a backup of but if it hadn't been... Well, you can imagine how unpleasant it would be if it happened to you.

This is the email that I received from the administrator. Note that he doesn't even say which photo it was at first. I had to ask him about it in another email before he told me:

"Hey Tristan, I had to remove one of your photos from MP that showed one of our old stickers (which was a bit of an accidental copyright violation). Sorry..."

Again: Inform the person before you delete their stuff. Just common courtesy, eh?

-Tristan

I, for one, don't like that. All it would take is for one punk to poorly rate a great photo (and maybe it's been rated great by 20 people) and the whole system is messed up. How about a photo doesn't appear on the front page if it has more poor votes than great votes?

This is stupid. I should be out climbing.

it wasn't your photo, it was a copyright violation. . . do you understand what that means? if they were to keep it up, and the wrong eyes were to see it, there would be legal trouble. btw, what are you thinking backing your photos up on a web-site?

Actually... It WAS my photo. And it was probably more of a trademark violation than copyright violation. And backing my photos up on a web site... ? I don't even know what you're really trying to say there.

Agreed this is not ideal, but we looked at the "selection" of photos both ways and decided taking the draconian measure produced the best selection of photos. Yes, some photos are missed... but fortunately there are 100,000 to choose from ;)

Like "Great" votes, is it possible to see who voted a photo "POOR"? Some photos may be voted "Poor" out of spite, etc....thus, unfairly black-balling someone's otherwise "Great" photo.

Just curious...

uh-oh zoso, now you've gone and done it. Nothing but headless-lowering-butt-shots from here on out....the irritating butt shot photo war, begun it has.

This gives the impression that you are using MP servers to hold all your photos (with no back-up anywhere). There is no guarantee they will still be there.

Trademark/Copyright, who cares about the terminology (the admin also said it was a copyright issue). The fact is that it probably wasn't a good idea for them to be hosting a photo with a logo that they have encountered trademark issues with in the past. I wasn't saying the photo wasn't yours.

That sounds like an excellent idea. One question though, would that negate all previous anonymous votes or would it only take effect when it was introduced? I have occasionally rated photos anonymously b/c I was too lazy to log in. Would those no longer count?

I think rating your own photos as 'great' is pretty lame, especially if it is a so-so pic.

HA! The photo that started this war has now been rated 'great' 7 times. The internets are so amusing.
