why stress? Too much to stress about already.
The Shawanagunks is way to long. GUnks is better. COntinuing on that path, what about names for climbs> FOr instance a classic a the Gunks... High Exposure or High E. Madame Grunbaum's Walst or Madame G's? I lack the exact spelling so it's much easier to abbreviate. Out here most areas don't seem to have the long names.

I too rebelled against the Abbreviators. Back home I would call Enchanted Rock just that. Most others called it Erock. And, of course, having hundreds of conversations about where to climb for the weekend I relented and now call it that. But only amongst those in the know.

Now on the other hand, I won't call a place something that everyone misspells and consequently misspeaks. We have a park called Pedernales. As you can see, PE DER are the first two syllables in the word. Most people can't see or read that, so they say PER DE. Ya'll goin' to Perdenales? Well, no. I am going to the other one.

Per-de-nal-es is a little better than: 'Let's go see Pert 'n' Alice'. I think E-Rock originated in part from the space limits on old computers.

At least I've never heard anyone use The Wich, The Quartz or The Rob for OK climbing......... yet

Believe me, I know all about the The Glass and the Bald, being in the Carolinas myself. On the topic of mispronounced words, what about Fontainebleau? It's pronounced "FAWN-tin-blow," not "FONT-in-BLUE."

I think that the "the" issue is a regional dialect thing. For example, I'm from California and we refer to all our freeways as "The..." Examples:the 110, the 101, the 405, the 105, the 91. In usage:"Get on the 110 and head west on the 91." We also have names for all our numbered freeways, but that just because we want to feel special.

In denver, people don't add "the." Colorado says"take I-25 to I-70." I get made fun of all the time for saying, "take the 25 to the 70."

And, no, it doesn't bother me either way.

Bad news about The Devil, word on The Street is The Chuck Norris tried the problem last week in The warm weather and pulled The Boulder down on top of himself. The problem is that no one is strong enough to get The Rock off him.

I always thought BoCan sounded kind of retarded, rendering it strangely apt.

Chuck Norris can do a wheelie on a unicycle.

I call BS that this must be a rumor. Hell, if The Norris had pulled down on the lip it would have turned the boulder into gravel.

Why do some people use the word "utilize" instead of the much better word "use"?

People who use the word "utilize" sound like pretentious doofuses.

I really don't mind most of "THE" places, the one I really hate is "The Job"

Spending the last 8 yrs in Boone, NC. I don't remember Blowing Rock Boulders ever being abbreviated, but cringed when people dropped G-Mom for Grandmother Boulders. I'm sure now that LRC has had it's named changed to The Stone Fort someone has dubbed it, "The Fort"

So Number One - You are saying that you have never referred to any of these places this way.

And Number Two - How would you recommend we refer to them, since it clearly bothers you?

Just looking out.

I've never made it to "The Dump." It's quite a drive for me for what I've heard are some mediocre sport routes.

I wondered how long it'd take before someone got personally offended by my lighthearted, momentary rant. =) For the record, the only crag I have ever referred to as a "The" crag is "The Gunks." That's because it is the only thing I'd ever heard the Shawanagunks called for the first several years of my climbing career. I'll still say "The Gunks" in exclusively climbing company, but yeah, I hate myself for it.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
