No.
The water feeds San francisco...it's absolutely Illegal to swim in the Hetch Hetchy Res.
In Fact I'm pretty sure it's illegal to even be close to it.

Heads up junior... Don't even think about it. I'm one of the few climbers back in this area. If i so much as see you near my water source I will bring the hammer of god (LEO's) down on you. That is a water source millions of people drink from. More importantly we as a small band of climbers respect the rules and laws that govern this sacred Sierra temple.

If you're so inclined go over to the 108 and check out the Stanisla(sp).

I never got this! It is the same in Acadia, where you can't swim in water. BS - freaking enviro's at work. I live in Phx, and all our water comes from the Colorado, Salt, Verde, and Agua Fria. Each of which has resevoirs and ton's of people pissing and pooping in it. It all get's filtered in the end. Can't swim in it. BS.

That most be some Sierra Club BS.

Go for it, just don't get caught.

That's why the water tastes like Sh$t down there!

Ummm...it has nothing to do with the Sierra club or any other enviro-clubs you want to blame.

It has everything to do with the fact that the HH water system is the largest un-filtered water system in the US and they would like to keep it that way. The water gets chlorine added to it at the end of the system but that is it.

So thanks for not swimming in the Rez and we appreciate your efforts in maintaining the sanitary nature of the water that services over 2 million people in the greater bay area.

The official rules for Hetch Hetchy are that you can not come in contact with the water in the lake or any tributary within 1 mile upstream of the lake. Ironically you can fish in the lake and touch the water on the outside of the fish. The one mile upstream rule is hard to enforce but it ain't too hard to enforce the swimming in the lake rule. Trust me as I know the rangers out there and they will spot you in second, they ain't dumb. Remember 9/11, that event paid for endless funding to protect places like Hetch Hetchy. Assault weapons are pretty close at hand at all times! A lot Wilderness Rangers work real hard to educate people ab out how to keep that water as clean as can be.
Plus you ever been to the Yosemite Jail? It ain't a pretty place.

The ironic thing about the Sierra Club comments is that if John Muir had his way, Hetch Hetchy wouldn't be supplying anyone with drinking water in the first place! (I fully agree with him). There were many other water sources that could be servicing the Bay Area today - however as soon as the governance of San Francisco saw the potential for damming Hetch Hetchy (and making money off of the power it could generate), they stopped looking at all other potentials.

The request to dam HH was actually denied a few times, and it was only until after politics landed a former San Franciscan as the Secretary of the Interior that it was sold to the city and allowed to be dammed. And thus ended the mini valley.

Although I suppose that also means that if the Sierra Club had its way, you might be climbing there, but it wouldn't be DWSing, so it's a moot point.

Yeah...I'm sure no giardia or other nasties are in there either. I'm sure the water is treated just like any other. What a joke.

Tradster: You can assume that HH water is treated like any other but you would be completely wrong. Do a little research and maybe you will learn...

Stri Dawg,

They flouridate... very common...

sfwater.org/mto_main.cfm/MC…

Since November 1, 2005, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission's (SFPUC) 2.4 million customers -- except for those in Half Moon Bay -- receive drinking water with fluoride. In November 2005, the SFPUC fluoridated the remaining 20% of its customer service area. The SFPUC has supplied fluoridated water to San Francisco residents and the majority of its wholesale customers since the early 1950's.

For additional information concerning the areas receiving fluoridated water, please call your water provider.

Please contact your health care or dental care provider if you have questions about fluoride supplements.

The map below will tell you about the SFPUC fluoridation status for your own community.
