that's not entirely accurate; the County Sheriff has charged for its costs incurred & under the definition of criminal conduct. The mountain rescue teams that conducted the search charged nothing.

Well, you can't fault the father for trying to help out his son. Too bad he is getting charged for aiding and abetting. He struck me as a really nice guy when I met him. At the beginning, I don't think he knew it was a hoax. I think his son contacted him later after he had fled Boulder.

Mark so perhaps this was the cost (as mentioned) for the C.Sheriff alone..? ..or does mountain rescue's cost get passed on to the sheriff's dept, just curious -thanks
I could write 2 pages on how it works. I guess the important things to note here is that the Sheriff has the duty to request any resources they need & they also have the authority to pursue criminal conduct. You would have to go to them for their account.
The FEMA/MRA accredited mountain rescue SAR teams never charge for their resources -- they don't charge the Sheriff, the County or State, FEMA, Homeland Security, the Family, the Taxpayer, the Insurance Companies, The person(s) needing rescue -- this means they charge No One & No Agency.
But, they do seek reimbursement from a non-taxpayer-based fund for replacement/expended items which is what the CORSAR Card helps support. The sheriff is charged with this accounting and may be looking to keep the fund whole; or due to the criminal conduct definition of this search, the fund might not be involved.
