Pretty common when your local gym has someone like Robyn Erbesfield as its in-house, kid's climbing coach. Lots of those little mutant rugrats around here.

I will be bringing minimal gear (read: shoes/harness/chalkbag/belay device/etc) so I won't have a lot with me. But I'm pretty psyched to check out some of the local stuff while I'm out there.

I may be able to get out during the week of the 18th. Send me a pm, I've got a full rack & rope willing to share. Safe travels ~k

"The only suggestion I can offer when you move to Boulder is prepare to take your climbing ego down a couple notches. Out east it was easy to enjoy being a "really good climber", or the elements of a small, close knit climbing community. Boulder will destroy any illusions you might have when the 9 year old girl next to you in the gym floats up a .13, or your project this year is the crag's warm-up route."

Yes, it is a very sports climbing scene ..... where you have world famous climbers who have never been to Yosemite. People saying "oh my God, my kid did the boulder boudler" meanwhile 10 year olds in Alaska climb Denali .... Oh yah, "speed climbing in not real climbing" is a common one I hear. So if you climb El Cap in a day, you still suck because you did not do the V10 boulder problem ....

This isn't directed at you personally, because I do think you have a valid point, but...

I really don't care about the 9 year old girl who can float up a .13 unless she can also carry a 50 pound pack of gear into the backcountry, climb a dozen pitches or more, swapping leads, protect her leads with trad gear, build safe belays, figure out how to retreive a stuck rope on rappel, perform self-rescue techniques if needed, cower on a ledge while a thunderstorm rakes the summit, then wipe the graupel off the ledges and continue upward after the storm, descend into the inky blackness of the void hoping to find a place to make an anchor if we have to bail after dark, and figure out how to ascend back up if she doesn't find anything good, figure out how to take the line that will keep it at 5.10b if that's what we are on, even though she could climb the 5.13 sequence to the right for fun if she wanted, but I wouldn't have a prayer of following it...

All of that is climbing. I am a "good climber" and that's enough for me.

Yes, but this is not climbing team material. "Not So Famous Old Dude" what is wrong with you climbing outside when we have perfectly good gyms around here. I bet you don't even wear spandex.

Hey now, I had some sweet-ass Nike tights in the early 90s. They looked like someone ate a starter set of Holbein oil paints, drank a pint of turpentine, then barfed up a Jackson Pollack masterpiece on them.

So...

If I'm going to be in the area for 3-4 days prior to moving in September, what should be the top of my list to climb for those days?

I definitely want to do some routes in Eldo...that much I know.

maybe not at the top of your list for your 3-4 day visit, but depending on what kind of climbing you like to do, eventually you should check out Clear Creek Canyon, just about 20min south of boulder in golden. mostly sport craggin of all difficulty levels, and a few trad testpieces.

i know, i know, a shameless

. ;)

The Hobo Cave at Flagstaff Mountain is a good spot.

I really enjoyed that article as well. On a side note, yesterday I made my first trip to clear creek (moved to Arvada about 3 months ago) and I really enjoyed the climbing. Thanks for providing an awesome new guide to the area Darren!! I was able to pick out an obscure crag and get away from all the crowds.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
