Hi all. Just fishing for beta anyone could provide on the Elephant Head over in the Santa Rita mnts. Would like to head over that way when the heat backs off a bit this fall sometime. Any info on rack, approach, camping, etc is welcome and very much appreciated. We're thinking of heading over in the afternoon, camping out then head up at first light. That's the plan but who knows... I'll gladly take the info offline and remove the thread after a few days - this concept open to discussion/input. Thanks, Daryl

Email Jimbo he has done a route or two on it. He is in CO so it might take a while for him to get back to you.

Yeah, definitely watch out for the egress. So I climbed it a few years back and actually wrote up the description on this site. Naturally, whatever I wrote there will be more accurate than what I remember today, but if you want to chat before you head up there, send me a PM and I'll give you my phone number. That would probably be of most use to you. The most important thing is to get started right. If you get started on the right track, you are golden. If you don't, there is NO telling where you might end up. Damn...this is making me wanna go back up there...when are you going?

Thanks all (offline and posted here) for the info, links, & photos. Bob, awesome graphical documentary of your ascent.. you guys looked absolutely whooped coming down that thing! James, I'll gladly take you up on the offer to chat. The idea of starting out on the right track early on seems to be the hot item with this endeavor. We're planning for sometime in late september or october but it's all way up in the air. I have a couple out of town events planned all in that same time frame but the idea is to wait till it cools off a bit sometime in the fall. Not sure why i'm so intrigued by this rock but once it's under our belts, we'll be setting sights on the baboquivari (sp?) soon after. It's been interesting to hear how different everyone's experiences are with these light mountaineering trips; some good, some mixed. The worst i've heard so far was one where a guy was the victim of some vehicular vandalism at the elephant head. Apparently some ATV goons decided to break out all his truck windows while they were up climbing. Anyway, thanks again guys!! d

Greg wrote:When is a good time to do this thing? It's been on my list to do for years... When are you going? I might have to get in on this. Fall sometime is the plan and yes, i'm all for the extra company. As of now, it's just my friend Jeff and i. Not sure if we'll camp out the night before but it just sounded like a good idea since we have to take a fairly round-about route to get up there. It just seems like it would be nice to wake at first light and jump right on it (after coffee, of course). Fair warning, i roast my own coffee beans so you risk getting hooked on the fresh roasted stuff. A day or two on the good stuff and it's hard to go back to folgers. :P
