Hello Folks,

Being lazy (and cheap) a friend and I are looking to split costs with renting a cowboy and horses to pack gear into Deep Lake for a week climbing trip into the Winds. Looking to go the last week in July or the first in August. It's too costly for just us two but for four it's a go, one way.

Anyone already set up or interested?

-cheers, David

Are you sure it is cheaper to add more people? We used horses to access the Cirque last year and we found that they charge per horse. Then they add more wranglers as you add more horses. Make sure you pack your things very compactly. We ended up taking two extra horses because we only calculated weight.

Below is from the Diamond 4 ranch that we used two year ago. The cost is confusing because the cost of the wrangler is not apparent. So it is cheaper to have more horses but only up to 4 horses. My husband and I could not get the horses to pick our gear up because of some indian land issue (too long to explain) so we had to carry our stuff out which saved us lots of money. We made sure we packed efficiently and light so we can carry out. Since we ate most of our food, the weight of our packs were reasonable. Unfortunately, my husband carried most of weight because I can't carry as much. Have fun at the Winds.

RESERVATIONS BY EARLY SPRING HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Season late June - September

Daily Rate.....$165/horse per day on the trail.

Approximate round trip price is $700/rider or $330/hiker based on 70lbs. gear/person and 140 lbs/pack horse max. More gear=more horses=more cost. When estimating your cost, remember to add the wranglers and their horses. They will string the empty horses home and return later to pack you out at the end of your trip.
One wrangler is sent for every 4 horses you use.
Please add tax 5% + gratuity 10-15%

have you checked into the Llama option..?

I'll be renting llamas and travelling through the Cirque around August 20-28 or so. They require a two-llama rental but I don't need 150-200 lbs of gear moved. I need 80 or so pounds.

Would be happy to drop gear for someone in the Cirque. Probably not Deep Lake, as it's not on our itinerary (and it's after you'll be there anyway). We'll be coming from Salt Lake and can pick up your gear on the way if you're interested and are going to be up there after it. We can cache it at a pre-chosen spot if you like.

I think the llama rental will be about $180, but the transport is the big cost. I think all told we're looking at like $420 with the cost of the trailer rental and extra gas from SLC to Pinedale (cheaper than renting once there). I'd pack some gear in for somebody (80 + lbs) for like $200 or $175 or something.
