What's up SoCal climbers!! My family and I (wife, my 6 year old daughter who is a solid 5.7/5.8 climber, and my 2.5 year old son who is a baby boulderer) are making our first trip out to J-Tree March 14th through the 17th. I am looking for a location that I can lead some lines and set up a top rope (5.7 - 5.9)for the family and then do some sick lines (5.10+ - 5.12) right next to them with my friend who is meeting me out there. I am hoping on finding a spot where I can do this all in a similar vicinity so the family is close by me if not next to me(if possible??). Any suggestions???? We are excited to experience the legendary J-Tree!!!! Can't wait!! Thanks for all and any feedback!!!!

I will gladly extend the "good dad takes family on climbing trip discount"

No matter where you stay, you're sure to have a great time. J-Tree is a magical place and March is typically perfect weather.

Atlantis Wall is another possibility. Minotaur, Solar Technology, Men with Cow's Heads, and Wet Pigeon are all good moderates; Trident, Fantasy of Light, and Don't Tread on Me (further right on the Tire Tread Wall) will probably make you happy.

The wall is easy to set up for TRs.

Comic Book Area, Watergate is short but has numerous 5.8s and some .10s and .11s as well.
Also Live Oak Picnic's Whispering Wall has a 5.6, 5.7, easy TR .10, as well as bolted 10c and 11.

HV Campground seems to be more of a lead and follow area rather than a TR set up. I avoid it for TR so as to not hog the classics. But if the park is slow, go for it.

If it's warm consider the Thin Wall in Real Hidden Valley. Short, good quality routes of various grades. North facing, so in in the shade but the base can be in the sun for anybody not climbing.

Bonus: It's in close proximity to Illusion Dweller which is an area classic and not to be missed.

Thinking about it more...Whispering Wall doesn't have a nice desert floor to stage from. Boulder hoping a bit. Probably not ideal for a 2-3yr old.

Thanks all!!! I really appreciate all of the feedback! Very helpful!! A good friend of mine purchased the 5.5 - 5.9 TRAD book for J-Tree and gave it to me. So that will also be very helpful. I can't wait!! Counting down the days!!

Thanks again!!

Mike,

Hey man no worries! If you would like you, can join my family and friends on some climbing. We will have two ropes, one for top rope and one for lead. We also will have some newbies on top rope, and my friend and I will be tradin! Mainly moderate climbing with the family, but you, your bro, and dad are more than welcome to join us!! We are just a friendly family from Colorado. We welcome anyone, as long as you don't mind my little ones(although my daughter is a pretty sick climber for her age "6", she tries to show me up all the time!!). Ha HA!!! Let me know!!!

Again thanks everyone for your help in planning my climbing trip!!

A special thanks to Susan with Joshua Tree Vacation Homes!!!

She was a savior to my climbing trip!! You all know, if the boss isn't happy "the wife", nobody is happy!!!!

Thanks!!!

-Nick
