I was hoping someone could help me out and point me in the direction of some good ice in the park (that may be in this weekend) that would be good to take a beginner to. I'd prefer a toprope-able site and it doesn't have to be very tall, just enough to get some swings and practice driving a few screws. Thanks.

Here's a link to Eli's RMNP report for today: totalclimbing.com/page.php?…

No mention of any of the easy/short ice routes though. There are 3 places where easy ice is usually a sure bet in the early season:

Columbine Falls: These are the falls below the old shelter cabin (It's gone now) which sat below Chasm lake. The top is right at the trail where it crosses the outlet of Chasm Lake and the descend to Peacock Pool. Bonus - there are usually some thin smears that you can TR to the left.

Loch Vale Curtains: These are above the creek below the Loch. You'll see them on the hike up to the Loch on your left, right after the Trail into Glacier Gorge splits off. Crowded. Bonus - The drainage from the Curtains up to the Loch is a killer powder run if the conditions are right.

Grace Falls: Right below the east/north face of Notchtop. When you get to Lake Helene, bushwhack north a bit to where the slope falls off. You'll see them a few hundred yards away. The left side usually forms up at a fairly low angle. Bonus - The Banana Bowls are the nice looking slopes you crossed just before you got the Lake helene. Great skiing if the conditions are right.
