Beer on a Sunday?

As a professional brewer in Boulder, I have to admit, Utah is pretty devoid in the outstanding beer category. There are a couple of good brews (Full Suspension, Polygamy Porter to name two), but typically you are stuck drinking thin, watery, unimpressive, lightweight renditions of world famous styles. From my experience, a night of pitchers only results in having to piss a lot and getting sleepy. (And you have to smell cigarette smoke the entire time, too.)

It is a shame what the Mormoms have done with your state. I usually visit friends in SLC a couple of times a year and when I do, I bring about 15 cases of my stuff in the back of my truck. Gotta love that bootlegging feeling...

Tough to beat gold 'ol "Wingers". That is if they're on their original recipe (seems they change it every couple years). Not a lot of selection (1 wing type). But, pretty good nonetheless.

Man I miss me some Old Chub...I'll be bootlegging some of that along with some other fine 'Rado brews next weekend, oh yeah!

Anybody like chinese? Long Life Veggie House is killer... everywhere else I've tried around here is sub-standard imo. any suggestions?

I haven't found any good chinese yet, so i just go to shitty wok(little world on state street).

luckily i spend a week in nyc every 6 weeks or so, and my office is a 5 minute walk from chinatown. i eat as much dim sum and other goodness as i can handle then.

Sampan, 21st south and 7th east. Not too bad.

Some good vietnamese too. La Calle Noodle House on state, fer instance.

yeah, loads of good vietnamese. i hit those pho joints on 3500 S in west valley all the time.

while we are cruising through the ethnic foods...

my favorite indian restaraunts are right next to each other on 400 S - star of india and himalayan kitchen.

favorite cheap thai is thai siam for lunch on state street. favorite nicer thai was bangkok thai on foothills, but i heard they are closed for now and will reopne somewhere else.

and back to straight ahead american fare...

favorite pizza is either the rusted sun on state around 1900S or the stoneground, which is somewhere near downtown - don't remember offhand. the pie by the university is good too, but too heavy for me.

favorite weird utah burger joint is crown burger.

Which ones? I go to the one on 3500S and 5600W (next to Sears) where they call you "hon". We call it, "hon", as in, wanna go to "hon" today? Killer fresh shrimp rolls.

>favorite nicer thai was bangkok thai on foothills

Have you tried the Monsoon Bistro? Can be spendy, but, pretty tasty. Lobster spring roll...wow...mango and lobster...same local as the old Bombay House, but above it.

>the pie by the university is good too, but too heavy for me.

Good atmosphere, though. I'm still a Wasatch Pizza fan, though. Also, the Big Apple down from REI (right by the Citrus Grill) has huge calzones for cheap, and kinda tasty.

>favorite weird utah burger joint is crown burger.

Gut wedge!

I'll have to admit a fondness for the Training Table blue bacon burger.

How 'bout Cafe Madrid (right by Rockreation and BD)? Spendy but good. Tapas, etc.

Seafood? Market Street, especially like the 13th east location.

Steak? Five Alls.

Best Greek takeout? Yannis. Addicted to their Greek chicken salad...ok, and baklava (the greek dessert hat).

Must be gettin' hungry...

i go to a different place rpetty much everytime when i go for pho. so far they all seem about the same(which is all very good) - just waiting for one to blow me away.

i've only eaten at the market street near big cottonwood and the new yorker downtown, and i thought they were terrible. maybe i'll try the one on 1300 e sometime and see if it is any better. good wine list though. the best sea food i've had in town is at tuscany, though i tend to just get whatever is fresh at the aquarius market next to tony caputo's and cook that.

i like wasatch pizza for delivery, but in general like the other two i mentioned way better.

haven't really gone for steak here yet. where is Five Alls? i've got a gift certificate for fleming's at the gateway so that will probably be the first one i get to.

added cafe madrid and monsoon bistro to the list of places to try.

have you tried em's? its tucked away in a kind of hard to find area behind the capitol(though walking distance from my house), but the food is good, ambience is great, and the wine list is extremely good.

Wow, now I understand why Jean was raving about the info she got on this thread for our trip! She was a great "brew & food" guide for us (not to mention doing some great leads on the rock). Thanks to everyone for helping to add to our climbing trip.

Now, if only you people could have prevented all that rain...

That place gives me the most epic heartburn every time. Its amazing how easily one simple slice can send me on a burning spiral of hell.

The best crossover that balances the flavors of margarita lime, juicy mango, and beer. check mangorita prices and order online or visit your near convenience stores or food markets have a great Sunday!

Also outdated info...we now have 4% by weight, 5% by volume beer in our grocery and convenience stores.

Accidently "imported" a bunch of beer from Wyoming last weekend...dang me.  Funny, Uinta is cheaper there, while Melvin is cheaper in the liquor store here.  Wierd.

Sure. Up to 5% ABV.

Just to clarify, it was 3.2% ABW, which is 4% ABV. The Uinta brews sold in other than the state liquor stores are all 5% ABV.

Gramps is a little slow these days ...

That said, since the move 5% ABV the DABC selection of higher alcohol beer is abysmal and of course taxed like hell.
