Visiting mid-august. Does anyone have a "favorite" hotel in the Estes Park area? It's not too often I get a vacation =( , so I'm looking for a nice to very nice place to crash after some long climbing days at Lumpy Ridge. I've looked on-line but can't decide as there are several to choose from.

Thanks, any suggestions will be appreciated.

Gigette,

When in rome...there is only one nice to really nice place to stay and that is the famous Stanley Hotel. If you are not familiar with it, it is a monster castle of a hotel which if you have seen the movie "The Shining" was the set for the entire inside of the movie and I believe that another Steven King movie, the devil car one was also filmed there. I think it's about 150-200 a night or so.

Minor correction to the minor correction: The original Brian DePalma "The Shining" movie was filmed at the Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood.

A made for TV mini-series movie, starring that guy from the TV show "Wings" was filmed exclusively at the Stanley.

Ain't trivia fun and off topic?

What is Christine? Oops, I'm off-topic myself. (A: the devil car one).

The Stanley is a great hotel, all the rest in town are mezzo-mezzo. Way cush by climber's standards!

Overflow parking for Lumpy can back up as far as the Stanley, also! LOL

Wait a second, I was always under the impression that they filmed the inside portion of the movie in the stanley and that the scenes at the end were the lodge on Mt. Hood. Does anyone know for sure what the set was based off of?

I do believe it was Christine.

Interiors where shot at Pinewood studios in London. Kubrick only worked in England. The exterior masters where done on Mount Hood. The maze was on the London set however. There were a couple of second unit shots of Boulder though.

Another option, albeit on the budget side of things is the "hostel" at Colorado Mountain School. I think its dorm style but you might meet some cool folks there nonetheless. Google CMS, i think they just changed their web address. And as a nice bonus . . . across the street lies the best donut shop in estes!

The CMS Web site has moved here:

I've stayed at their lodging many times. It is a great place to meet people, but it can be loud (one cannot always get a good night's sleep there).

Ditto on the donut shop, it rules!

Kubrick, DePalma, I always get those two mixed up. Hey Jim, where did you get that cool shot of the Stanley?

Lee,

I found it here:

Interesting how we are talking about the movie "The Shining" and there is a picture of the Stanley Hotel on a psychiatry Web site. Coincidence? :)

I work in a psychiatric hospital. The Stanley REALLY is the place for me! Not to worry, I can handle just about anyone that's coming at me with a weapon. It's one of my job perks! As we say at work.....Never a "dull" moment.

Jim, I also love that picture. Looks so mysterious; Beautiful structure, and surroundings. I can't wait to stay there!
Soon it'll be.... "Heeeeeeres GIGI!'
