Description

Big clean face near the top of the valley southwest of the upper Hoffer Lake. Taller than the Lower Wall. Three of the four routes are trad and one is a toprope.

Anchor situation: There are two anchors on the big ledge at top. The vintage gear, probably placed by Lute Jerstad in the 1970’s, has been replaced with shiny modern hardware. Each consists of two bolts with hangers only. Both are set well back from the top edge, so need long slings for a smooth lower/tr if belaying from below. The left anchor is at the top of Chisel Queen but can also be used for Wide Bottom. The right one is between Cross Roads and North Flake and can be used for both. It’s easy to get to the top and clean anchors by scrambling up wide gully on left side of face.

This crag is included in the 2006 Falcon guide to Rock Climbing Oregon where, misleadingly, it’s called Upper Parker Creek Wall. Aside from Cross Roads, the other three route names come from this guidebook, although it's likely these are not the original names.

A worthy side excursion is to continue up the path a few hundred feet past Upper Wall. You step out of the trees into a meadow with a small tarn below the dramatic north face of Lee’s Peak.

Getting There

From Anthony Lake hike up the Hoffer Lakes Trail for 0.75 mile to the upper of the two Hoffer Lakes. The Upper and Lower Walls lie up the small valley southwest of the lake. From the trail, scramble up and around some slabs along south side of lake to a meadow. The Lower Wall is visible behind the meadow on the right side of steep valley. A faint trail leads to its base and continues up steeply along the base of a near-continuous escarpment to the Upper Wall. It takes 45 min to 1 hr to hike to the Upper Wall from the boat ramp parking area on Anthony Lake.
