Per Dakota Millard: the access issue suggestion states to park before Clyde Campground. The recommended approach that does not cross private property starts at Clyde Campground's parking. 100% do not approach from the hairpin where the area is most visible. Approaching from the hairpin directly crosses private property.
Description
This wall is the left side (south) of Squire Gulch.
Squire Gulch is a small side drainage at the beginning of Cathedral Park. Please only park at the dirt parking lot at Clyde Campground next to the Forest Service rules signs. From there, access the area via the established trail system. Tucked into this narrow gulch are several fully bolted sport routes that create a quiet, approachable setting for newer climbers and small groups.
The area was developed in 2017 and founded by The Knights of Heroes, an organization that hosted outdoor programs for children whose fathers were killed in the Global War on Terrorism. The Outdoor Club at UCCS was also a major contributor, dedicating hundreds of hours to cleaning, trail work, and route development to help establish the area.
Within the Knights of Heroes climbing program, toprope anchors were installed first. When a child completed the first ascent of a route, they were given the privilege of naming it. The same approach was used at School House Rocks and Jousting Alley. In many cases, if the child was old enough, they later returned to help bolt the lead line themselves. It was common for routes to be named in honor of their fathers who were killed in action.
Knights of Heroes has since dissolved as an organization, because, thankfully, the Global War on Terrorism has come to an end, and the number of service members killed in action has dropped substantially. As a result, the specific need the organization was created to serve no longer exists in the same way — a reality that is deeply bittersweet but ultimately something to be grateful for.
If the climbs feel short or elementary, that is by design. This area was built with intention - to create opportunity, confidence, and healing. Please be respectful, and recognize that this small gulch holds deep personal meaning to the young adults who helped shape it.
Getting There
This is for the left side of Squire Gulch:
Please only park at the dirt parking lot at Clyde Campground, next to the Forest Service rules signs. From there, carefully cross the road, and pick up the main trail directly across from you. Follow it straight as it begins a gradual climb up the hill. Stay on this primary path all the way to the top. Once you crest the hill, continue in the same direction as the trail descends on the other side. As you head downhill, watch to your left - the crag is tucked into a small, narrow gulch just off the trail. If you begin dropping too far into the main drainage, you’ve gone a bit past it. With that said, the coordinates are spot on, and you can't miss it. All routes on the left are accessible from the top.
