Description Suggest change

The North River Gorge offers climbing and route development near Stokesville, VA. Tucked in the National Forest, cliffs offer easy access hikes from multiple trailheads. Sandstone dominates the area, though much of the rock is fractured and chossy. Any route development will likely require extensive trundling and cleaning. In spite of this, the area is ripe for development. The North River is always nearby and offers a great place to splash around and cool off in summer months, and you can find some sweet swimming holes out there as well.

Getting There Suggest change

For most access, head west from Stokesville, VA, through North River Gap and onto Forest Service Rd 95. Trail access in multiple locations from the Wild Oak Trail, to North River Gorge Trailhead on to North River Campground. The upper reaches of the gorge are below Elkhorn Lake.
