Description
Crystal Bluff is Arkansas's latest urban crag situated right above the Arkansas River and the River Trail in North Little Rock. The crag is unique in that it is located 5 min. from downtown Little Rock and North Little Rock in the heart of the largest metropolitan area in Arkansas. As such, it is not as common to get the solitude you might expect from most outdoor climbing areas in Arkansas, but when the leaves grow out and you visit during the middle of the day, you may even see some wildlife and forget for a moment you are in the middle of the city.
The rock here is quartzitic sandstone of the Jackfork Formation, which is a bit different than the popular climbing spots in the state. The rock fractures in a more blocky fashion which yields great crimps and edges for your feet. However, the blocky nature also lends itself to midway ledges, so many routes have spectacular rest positions. There is a great variety of climbing, from bouldery short cruxes to power endurance routes at a nice range of grades. The crag is currently lacking in the pump department, though several routes will make you feel the burn for sure. Routes range from 30' to 75'+, and the average grade seems to be around 5.9 to 5.10a.
Crystal Bluff is on private property owned by the City of North Little Rock. The area is being developed by the Arkansas Climbers Coalition through a partnership with the city. There are other areas nearby that are currently under development, and you are advised not to approach any areas that are not currently open to the public as this could be considered trespassing. All park rules apply to the climbing areas, including operating hours.
The ARCC is responsible for maintaining the hardware at the crag. If you encounter any hardware issues, please follow this link and fill out the form.
The area can get crowded, and the belay areas are not very big. Please consider hanging out in the grass field below the crag if you are taking a long break. Dogs are heavily discouraged, but if you decide to bring your pup, it must be leashed at all times.
There is no top access. All climbs require a competent leader and their own equipment.
Routes with red tags are closed to the public. DO NOT CLIMB ON THEM.
Getting There
Getting there is fairly simple: take River Road from downtown North Little Rock until you run run into the fork in the road with the two gates. Park there to the left. If the gravel parking lot is full, please do not park in the grass. Park up the road in the asphalt lot near the skatepark and boat put-in. Search "Riverview Skatepark" in your maps application and it is about a quarter-mile past. There is a yellow sign at the base of the approach trail that says Crystal Bluff.
The approach to Main St. and Vestal is very short, but steep, on a volunteer build trail.
There is no running water or restrooms in the immediate vicinity. There is occasionally a port-a-potty near the skatepark. The next closest john would be the gas station at the corner of Broadway and... Broadway. By the baseball field.
Fundraising Campaign
The hardware for this project has thus far been completely crowd-funded from individual donations to the area's Donorbox fundraising campaign. There are several more undeveloped crags in the area, and we are excited to keep working on bringing them to the public! Please consider donating so we can continue to purchase hardware and develop new areas along the bluff line.
