Description Suggest change

A very nice winter town with a friendly vibe and artsy plaza that has several real climbing possibilities close to town on BLM land with nearby dispersed camping. Many folks (mostly retired snowbirds) are in the area enjoying the winter in the 70s amongst the saguaros. As of yet nothing is posted for established routes other than the four lines in Organ Pipe 30 miles distant. The notable and exciting possibilities are towers/summits called Ajo Peak, the Locomotive formation (see pictures and the route Choo Choo Track) and Cardigan Peak. In front of Cardigan Peak is a free standing tower known as the "Thumb" (See pictures). There is also a "pile" know as The Cow Pie" that has a north wall for top roping (see pictures). The towers are made of a rather stable conglomerate of sandstone and granite and have cracks as well. Just a few more miles out of town there is the smaller formation known as Locomotive Rock with routes.

Getting There Suggest change

The five aforementioned possibilities all have easy approaches from your nearby campsite. Many of the best campsites require a 4 x 4. There are also many sites suitable for large RVs. The crux to the approaches is the cholla. No open towed shoes here and bring a pair of needle-nosed pliers.

To view these formations, take Rocalla Ave out of town to Darby Well Road (aka the scenic loop).
