Description

Ormanj is a forested crag area located under the namesake summit (large communication tower on top). Consisting of 7 sectors with around 50 routes ranging in grades from 4a to a lone 8a with the bulk of the offerings clocking in from 5a to 6c.

The rock is compact limestone rising out of the forest to climbing route heights under 20m. Orientation is primarily west and south. Shady base and mountain breezes would make the location suitable for warmer climbing seasons. Winter looks to be sometimes snowy and cold.

Associated with the Planinarski dom Ormanj mountain hut which hosts students and has a climbing wall (along with helpful hosts!).

The area has a quiet remote “out there” feel to it and does not appear to be consistently well travelled. Local hiking trails and the via ferrata (rusty and purported substandard hardware?) would be diversions apart from the climbing. The area may also be popular for hunting.

Getting There

Located about 30km west and a bit south of Sarajevo. From Sarajevo, head to Hadžići then drive south and bend to the west on the M17 toward Pazarić.

Exit North of the highway, drive to Doljani and up to the mountain hut Planinarski dom Ormanj. The final very steep bit is on newer concrete with no room to pass and no shoulder and leads to a newer parking lot prior to the hut. Park here and hike up the trail to the looker’s left of the mountain hut.

Approach the climbing area by hiking up an old road past a newer mountain hut. Follow the trail indicated by the red/white dots and signs for the via ferrata. At around half way to the crag, pass by an active mountain spring. Continue toward the higher elevation mountain and the trail will bend left and parallel the steeper cliff area. Pick a spot to traverse over to the crag. Take care as there’s a bit of loose rock and foliage and the footing is not always great.

Time for the approach would range from 30 minutes to an hour depending on which sector is desired.
