Description Suggest change

While only host to a few classics, Area D is a great hang. Perched on a bench high in the Chicago Lakes Basin, its easy to see why this area is a popular backpacking and hiking destination. The hike is short but severely steep on the way back up, keep a Gatorade in the car.

Getting There Suggest change

Park at the Summit Lake area, which is operated by Denver Mountain Parks. If using the parking lot, pay the fee via reservation. Parking on the shoulder on the road leading up to the lot is free as far as I know.

Hike a couple hundred yards to the lookout, then launch down and right along the Upper Chicago Lakes trail. After a sandy bit the trail will hit a meadow and the boulders appear on the right. Leave the trail around a slight ridge and stay on durable surfaces through a willow grove.

Expect 1000' loss and about a mile of hiking on good trail.
