Description
This is a low cliff band with some fun easier problems, but the classic Ouchie and the cool variation Ouchie Direct are the lines worth coming for.
- PROJECT: Try a direct start to Never Cry Wolf (following the seam below). Definitely not a classic, but it might be fun.
Getting There
Coordinates: 41.8491441, -71.9788002
DIRECTIONS FROM THE OLD PATH BOULDER:
If you're coming from the west (Jericho Rd/Wolfden Rd gate), The Lost Boulder is a seven minute walk from The Old Path Boulder.
1- From The Old Path Boulder, continue walking away from the dirt road. In a minute, you will reach an old abandoned path (overgrown farm road).
2- Take a left onto that path. Follow that path (passing the Low Down Boulder, the Minutemen Boulder, and the Woodland Creatures Boulder) until you intersect with the red blazed trail.
3- At this obscure intersection, cross the red blazed trail and walk directly into the woods. Walk perpendicular to the red blazed trail for approximately 50 yards. Initially, you will veer to the left until the brush thins out.
4- You should now be standing above the Lost Boulder. You can't see the boulder during this approach. When you get close, it will be clear that you are at the top of a low cliff band.
ALTERNATIVE APPROACH DIRECTIONS:
If your main goal is to climb at Lost Boulder, Woodland Creatures, and The Old Path, it's quicker to enter from the EAST side of the park at a closed gate on Wolf Den Drive (INSTEAD OF Wolf Den Road). This will allow you to reach those areas in 15 minutes or less. This gate is located near an unoccupied house (owned by the park) just past the entrance to Wolf Den Campground. Park on the side of Wolf Den Drive at this gate.
1- From this gate, walk up the dirt road (Wolf Den Drive) for about 8 minutes to the Red Blazed Trail.
2- Take a left onto this trail, and walk for about 2 minutes to a fork in the trail. To the left, the red blazed trail continues. To the right is an unmarked path (abandoned farm road). Stop here.
3- To find the LOST BOULDER (OUCHIE), don't take either of these trails. Instead, leave the trail and enter the woods to your left. Lost Boulder is about 50 yards away walking perpendicular to the red blazed trail. Initially, you'll veer to the left taking the easiest path through the brush. When the brush thins out, aim for the obvious small boulder. Next, aim for the hemlock tree. This tree marks the best spot to drop down to the climbs. The boulder is hidden from view on the approach because it's a small cliff band facing away from you. The walk from the EAST gate to the Lost Boulder is 12 minutes.
4- To find WOODLAND CREATURES and THE OLD PATH, take a right at the fork. This will put you on the unmarked path (abandoned farm road). Follow this overgrown path for a few minutes. The first prominent boulder you'll see (uphill to your right) is Woodland Creatures. If you continue on the overgrown path, you'll see Minutemen Boulder and Low Down Boulder nearby on your right. Just beyond these boulders, the path curves slightly. Soon you'll see The Old Path Boulder at a distance to your right. The walk from the EAST gate to The Old Path Boulder is 15 minutes.
5- To find ROOT CELLAR, take a left at this fork. This will keep you on the red blazed trail. Continue on the red blazed trail for 10 more minutes. See the Getting There section under Root Cellar for details about the final 4 minute bushwhack off of the red blazed trail. The walk from the EAST gate to Root Cellar is 24 minutes. This is equal to the walk from the WEST gate (Jericho Rd).
6- If you have reached THE OLD PATH, and would like to continue on to the rest of the boulders in the park, you can return to the main dirt road easily. Stand in front of The Old Path, facing the boulder. The main dirt road (Wolf Den Drive) is about 100 yards away if you walk directly forward from this position. When you reach the dirt road, take a left to find Big Bad Boulder or Hermit Boulder (see the Standard Approach Directions). If you take a right instead, you can follow Wolf Den Drive back down to the parking for the Alternative Approach.
