Description Suggest change

It's a small area with several interesting 30 foot climbs. The Bottom, contrary to it's name, is nearer to the top of the bluff than the bottom, and it is really not very hard to get to compared to many other minor crags at Devil's Lake. The crag juts out from a minor, disorganized rampart that is below and parallel to the Hollywood and Vines rampart. It's worth checking out, particularly if you're in the Hollywood and Vines area already.

Getting There Suggest change

Start on the north end of the West Bluff Trail and head south. When you reach the south end of the Hollywood and Vines rampart, The Bottom is below you to the east. But the easiest approach is to go 120 feet farther south on the West Bluff Trail until you reach a low spot in the trail with a 3'x4' wedge-shaped rock on the east side of the trail. (If you're coming from the south this rock is 100 feet north of the Gaffke bench.)

At this rock, head north-east into the woods. Walk 100 feet on gently down-sloping terrain, staying 20-30 feet from the minor rampart that drops down on your right. Near the root-ball of a fallen tree, there is a small gap in the rampart that allows you to scramble down towards the lake. Make a short descent to a small ridge guarded by a cedar tree. There is a rock platform straight ahead, but that is not the top of The Bottom.

From this small ridge, you can go down to the left (north-east) to reach the top of The Bottom and then farther down a steep dirty gully to the bottom of The Bottom. Or go down the right (south) side of this ridge on steep but solid terrain, and circle around to the bottom of The Bottom.
