Description
The only section of the state forest located on the western side of the creek, this area is unique in that it hosts climbs at higher elevation on a glacial dome rather than along the creek side. There is certainly some climbing along the creekside as well, but the main attraction is atop a wonderful and breezy overlook with rock escarpments in every direction.
Getting There
On the Western Side is Hell Spring Mountain. Named for a flowing spring gushing straight out from a deep cave, this zone has easier access with an approach of roughly 10-15 minutes. This zone contains a high concentration of boulders on and around its highest point, Hell Spring Mtn. A small glaciated dome with climbs on all sides. This makes for an excellent day trip for boulders. Park on Lead Mine Road on the west side of the creek. Find a small old trucking trail along the north side of the road, and park along a long shallow pull off on the south side. Enter the trucking trail heading north. Cross a creek, head directly uphill, and find the highest treeless top. You are here.
