Description
Crater Lake is a prime spot to learn the art of dry tooling. Located next to the Mt Sima Industrial Area means you can do a few pitches then grab a cold pint at Winterlong after. The rock is basalt - the same geological unit as Miles Canyon. The lines are generally short (~8m) and there can be a fair bit of loose rock, so be careful and wear a helmet.
The crag is currently under development and no fixed gear has been installed yet. This page will act as a database for the lines we've played around on and I'll update it as it progresses.
Top rope access is extremely easy via trees above as the trail takes you to the top of the cliff but you'll want a long anchor cord (maybe 8-10m) to ensure the masterpoint can go over the edge. I've taken to bringing two ropes. One to fix for a rap line to set the anchor up and make it easier to descend to the base and the other to TR on. Though there's ways to do it with just one rope, I would just highly recommend only approaching the edge while being on some sort of safety as it can be extremely slippery.
There is a walk out/in option but there is a short scrambling section that can be slippery. The plan is for there to be a fixed handline there eventually to make it less sketchy. Going up is much easier than going down.
Getting There
Drive past Winterlong/Industrial area. There will be a side road after the curve. We've been parking just off the main road without blocking the side one (I believe its the start of a snowmobile trail). GPS: 60.641662048153314, -135.03240081992095. Only suitable midwinter if you have a 4X4 high clearance and snow tires, we got stuck here in a 2WD and had to park at Winterlong, which is only a short addition to an already short approach.
The crag is obviously visible to the North, above the pond (or Crater Lake). Follow the obvious trail that connects with the side road to the top of the cliff.
