Description
The village of Peñas is located about 90 minutes north of La Paz and is an excellent base to explore the central and norther part of the Cordillera Real, and Lake Titicaca. The village is nestled up against a massif of sandstone crags and low hills that runs north to south between the Lake and the Cordillera. There are currently about 150 climbing routes in Peñas (most of them bolted) on predominantly high-quality sandstone. Most of the routes are single pitch sport climbs but there are several multi-pitch bolted routes as well. The views of the Cordillera from Peñas are exceptional and on a clear day one can see the entire range from Illimani to Ancohuma. Route development is ongoing and there is significant potential for additional high-quality routes.
The local community-based organization La Cordillera Experience provides guiding services and operates a via ferrata adventure park. There are several options for accommodations in the village ranging from basic hostels to a new hotel, which offers hot water and comfortable beds. Dining options are more limited and currently there is only one café, which is usually open only on the weekends. Route information can be found at es.lacordilleraexperience.org/ and hard copy topos are available at the café in the village.
