Description
The PDF Guide: drive.google.com/file/d/108…
The granite Scuitto Bluffs have a small variety of trad/mixed routes and sport climbing on often-discontinuous cracks and featured slabs. The angle of the rock tends to provide climbing which is footwork focused and provides friendlier grades than the nearby Hen House. While the Scuitto Bluffs face south, there is some tree-filtered shade for belays, and a frequent breeze will often keep you from cooking on a hot summer’s day. Up on the plateau at nearly 1300 meters elevation, the temperature is most often 6-7°C cooler than Kamloops.
Getting There
The Scuitto Bluffs are found near Scuitto Lake, southeast of Kamloops, at GPS coordinates 50.5349, -120.1181. It takes 55-60 minutes to drive from Kamloops, and an additional 10-20 minutes to hike in. This makes it a further climbing area from town, but it has its niche: some good easy/moderate featured-slab sport and trad, a hard unique sport route (The Kraken), and the proximity to the Hen House are all reasons to make the trip. The road can be navigated in a 2WD vessel during the summer and fall (spring travel is yet to be assessed), though an SUV+ type vehicle is recommended.
Part 1: From Kamloops, drive to the Scuitto Lake Recreation Site (Found on Google Maps).
Part 2: From Scuitto Lake Recreation Site to Scuitto Bluffs (No Google Maps, photo below):
Drive through the rec site, and make a right turn 400m past Scuitto Lake (towards Campbell lake), crossing a cattle guard/small bridge. Drive 500m further and make a hairpin right turn. Here is where the rough seas begin for your vessel, we recommend SUV type clearance although my vessel – a Hyundai accent sedan – has always proven itself seaworthy. Continue for 2.2 km from the hairpin, passing a small dirt road at 1.8 km. Park at the second dirt road at GPS coordinates 50.5352, -120.1240.
Part 3: The Trail
The trail begins down this side road at a large boulder on the left. Follow the trail (marked by cairns and sticks) for 7-10 minutes to two huge sticks leaned up against a tree in an upside down V: Go straight uphill to battle the monster at the Kraken Wall or continue on the main trail for another 10 minutes to reach the main walls at GPS 50.5349, -120.1181, starting with Lower Deck. The trail is not yet well-trodden; we highly recommend using the GPX directions that follow.
