Description Suggest change

Hochtor, located right in the center of Gesäuse National Park, is the highest mountain in the Ennstaler Alps at 2,369 meters. You can reach the summit from the south by scrambles and via feratta routes, or from the north by climbing the 700 meter limestone face. Grades range from UIAA 3 to 9. You should absolutely buy the Gesäuse climbing guidebook by Reinsmüller and Hollinger. It's a massive book, and it's in German, but it has great topos and maps and is really easy to figure out even if you don't speak the language.

Getting There Suggest change

If you are planning to hike to the top, start from Johnsbach on the south side and pass the Hesshütte on the way up. For the north face, you can park at the Parkplatz Haindlkarhütte (47.583784, 14.612101) and start from there, or you can be fancy and stay at the Haindlkarhütte the night before and cut the approach in half. Either way, you will pass this hut on the way up, and there is water available to top off. Page 369 of the guidebook has a map that indicates approaches to particular climbs.
