Description Suggest change

The Joyland area is a small cluster of sandstone boulders (and craggy outcroppings) nestled in a shady aspen grove with mostly flat landings.

Currently, there are only a handful of boulders and (mostly moderate) problems that have been cleaned and climbed, but more potential exists to continue opening more difficult lines on the classic "Slightly Floating' Boulder and a few other blocks in the surrounding area. The short and slabby 'Candy Walls' Boulder has many fun slab / arete problems and is great if you are out climbing solo or with the kids. The prominent 'Joyland' Boulder has an excellent collection of warm-up problems and link-ups on all four sides and is a great place to start your journey up Hillside Drive on your way to other crags or for a chill day bouldering in a beautiful and lush sub-alpine setting.

Future development: There are a number of other boulders / lines above and around the craggy outcroppings and on the other side of the road that may hold future climbing potential, but are currently a bit of a bushwhack from the main cluster currently being developed to receive any serious attention.

Have fun exploring, and don’t forget your pads and scrub brushes!

Getting There Suggest change

Drive: The Joyland Boulders are 6.3 miles up Hillside Drive (from CO Hwy 145) on the uphill side of the road. With an extremely short approach, this translates to approximately 45 minutes to the main cluster from the town of Dolores, CO. The access trail to the boulders is currently flagged from a very small pullout on the left, a few hundred yards up the road beyond a prominent camping spot (at 6.2 miles with a view and a small pyramid-shaped boulder) on the right side. Unless you plan on camping, park in the first small pullout on the left beyond the campsite or in a wide spot in the road slightly further up on the right.

Approach: hike out of the small pullout diagonally uphill (under a rainbow-arched aspen tree) and back towards the campsite (maybe 1-2 minutes) to reach the low and wide 'Candy Walls' Boulder. Just a stone's throw further along the marked trail leads to the massive, overhanging 'Slightly Floating' Boulder and further along the flat bench back toward the campsite leads to the stand-alone 'Joyland' Boulder.
