Description Suggest change

Small (and I mean small) collection of boulders located just below the Hunchback Wall. The approach is relatively steep and somewhat strenuous and the climbing is limited, but there are some really nice climbs. In particular, the west overhang of the Hunchback boulder provides some steep crimp pulling goodness. Given their location below the Hunchback Wall, the boulders get good shade throughout the morning, providing some much needed summer bouldering options when the weather is too hot to enjoy Carver/Empire.

Additional information can be found in the guide book "Gorge Bouldering Select" published by East Wind Design.

Getting There Suggest change

From Portland, drive east towards Mt. Hood and Hwy 26. After passing Welches' lone signal at the 76 gas station and continuing for another 1 mile, turn right onto Salmon River Rd. Continue for 0.8 miles, passing a guard rail on your right and a scrappy rock bluff on your left. Immediately park on the narrow shoulder to your right. Here’s what that rock bluff looks like. Then find an obvious water drainage just south (right) of the rock bluff and follow the well-trodden trail from there. If presented with another option, always take the more well-trodden, steeper-trending option.

There is one lone boulder above the trail a little over half way to the Hunchback wall. This is *not* the main cluster, but has a couple nice problems on it. This boulder is listed as "Lower Hunchback aka Lumbar boulder".

A few hundred feet before the trail reaches Hunchback Wall, the first boulder ("Esmeralda") of the main cluster will be visible just off the main trail. At this point, the trail to Hunchback Wall switches back left and the trail to the main cluster of boulders continues to the right.
