Description
"An Unnaturally Good Time"
The boulders at Rattlesnake Lake are a highly accessible concentration of rock climbs near the Seattle area. With just a few pads one can climb a number of diverse problems 5-20 minutes from the car.
Let's be honest, much of the rock is quite chossy. That being said - the climbing is fun and problems with more stars have solid rock. If you decide to go bouldering here show up with an open mind :)
During much of the year the boulders near the waterline are actually under water. Late September to January is typically when the lake levels will be low enough for climbing there but it depends on the year. Everything in the forest is good all year.
The waterline boulders are quick to dry, making them an excellent choice during short windows of decent weather in the winter. The Submarine boulder in particular is a great starting point with relatively solid rock, a diverse grade range, and the shortest approach. The one downside is all the gawkers. The hillside boulders get shade, dry quickly in a breeze, and offer more solitude. If you are looking to establish new climbs, go wandering around on the Hillside.
Getting There
Exit 32, go right, past the golf course and up the hill. Park at the Rattlesnake Ledge parking area near the end of the road.
From the parking follow the Rattlesnake Ledge trail around the northeast contour of the lake until you reach the bathrooms and the main trail heads up into the forest.
To get to the Waterline Boulders, from the bathrooms you will simply walk out onto the lake bed towards the obvious Submarine boulder. The Lake Side boulder is just in the forest nearby. Bloom is clearly visible further down shore from Submarine, Streetcar further still, and Streamliner past that and a bit into the woods.
To get to the Hillside Boulders walk the main ledges trail to where it intersects with an access road on the right (with the main trail continuing straight). At this point go LEFT over some logs and pick up the old ledges trail. Follow this for some time up a hill until you can see the large Moss Troll boulder in the forest to your right (15/20min from parking). On the weekends I like to park at the start of the access road which is a bit before the main parking area, you can follow this in and just go straight at the intersection with the main ledge trail. This is nice when the Rattlesnake Lake lot is full/busy and allows you to avoid all the stares from the non boulderers as the approach from this direction is generally quiet.
