Description
New secluded crag found in a Talus field just north of Oakridge. Located on national forest land and sees very little traffic other then the users of the OHV trails. There is likely only bouldering in the area due to the cliff bands at the top being quite blocky and loose looking. All climbing is on basalt, but at time climbs more like sandstone with delicate top outs. As far as the primary developers know, no one has ever climbed out here before and there is still likely a lot of potential in the area. If you are interested in helping develop more feel free to reach out and ask about the ethics we have established in the area!
Rock and movement quality is comparable to that of other Willamette Valley bouldering spots such as the garden (and in some cases better.) A note on the grades- only 4 people have been to this area as of the creation of the mountain project page and while we tried to come to consensus and a fair rating based on what we thought, we could have missed the mark so just suggest whatever you may think on the individual climbs and feel free to discuss. Additionally, due to the nature of the rock and the general lack of holds, there are not many beginner to moderate climbs (yet) so just be aware that it is hard!
There is no cell service at the area and some of the approaches can be a little sketchy through the Talus. Plan accordingly and be safe!
Getting There
Drive is a little confusing at times and there is no cellular for a long time leading up to the parking so make sure you have your GPS ready before you get close. The parking spot is located at about ( goo.gl/maps/8mjgj56DkTXRVaxL6) Currently NF 19 is closed so you will have to take a roundabout way to get there which is about the same time but more unpaved roads.
Written directions as follows if you have no service to use Google Maps: Coming from Eugene take 58 east to West Fir Rd and take a left. Pass the bridge and continue on via a left. At the covered bridge take a right and continue on until a fork in the road by the golf course; take the left onto McFarland Rd. Very soon after take the left onto High Prairie Rd and continue until it turns into an unpaved road and continue on. At the first fork with signage for Huckleberry Flats, take a right. At the next fork take a left. At the sign with the large letter "F" take the leftmost left. continue past the destroyed car on the right until the obvious pullout at the end of a long downhill stretch with a steep drop to your left.
Once parked, there is a newly developed trail trending ENE that will take you through the woods into a small talus field with cairns and spits you out at the first two boulders whose location can be found at about ( goo.gl/maps/ykMKkhAjkJ7BKodX6) The hike from parking to first boulders can be done in 10-15 minutes with pads.
