Description
Louil Hill is in Terra Nova National Park. Louil Hill is often windy and the weather can be cold and rainy so make sure to check the weather before leaving. Most if not all the rock on Louil Hill is granite and it makes for great climbing with some fair size faces. Louil Hill stands at around 450 ft high above sea level and provides great views as well as climbing. There are no bolts, or fixed anchors however almost all of the routes can be top roped. There are a number of boulders and boulder sized cliff faces as well. The hill itself has a couple of nice climbable faces in the 20-50ft range, but the escarpment to the south that runs between the two hills is about 300m long and has a good number of potential routes from ~30 to 100ft. Most of these have yet to be climbed. The final approach to the area will require about 0.5km of bush whacking.
Getting There
Louil Hill is in Terra Nova National Park near the exit to route 310 off the Trans Canada Highway (TCH), it's about a 2.5 hour drive from St. Johns. Once you exit the TCH onto route 310 the trailhead for the Louil Hill hiking trail is on your right about 1 km along route 310. From the trailhead follow the left branch of the trail to the stairs, up the stairs to the look out/sitting bench on the smaller hill. From there you must go off trail to the next hill, which is Louil Hill. There are some rough game trails between the peaks, but expect a fairly arduous bush whack through tight coniferous trees and windfall for about 0.5 km. Its open and easy walking once you get to Louil Hill then you can go any were you want and explore the hill there are a number boulders and a coupled decent rock faces.
