Description
The Obscure Wall located in Lost Creek Wilderness is an obscure rock that Peter Williams and Keith Schoepflin named after their first ascents in 1983. The Obscure Wall is located across from and perhaps a quarter mile south of where Reservoir Gulch joins Lost Creek. GPS coordinates are: 39.210N, -105.410W. The summit elevation approximately is 9,250 feet. The rock is composed of Pikes' Peak granite with most of the cracks being coarse. The face climbing ranges from smeary crumbly edges to moderate-sized chickenheads. It can be seen on the left side of the Lost Creek drainage as you hike north from the Shafthouse and is visible from the overlook where the trail scrambles down to Lost Creek. It is easily identified by the flying buttress on its south end.
Getting There
Hike Goose Creek Trailhead (#612) north to the ridgeline separating Watkins Gulch and Reservoir Gulch (4.0 miles). Exit the trail shortly after crossing Watkins Creek (usually dry) onto a faint trail at a tree on the left with a blaze marking GPS coordinates: N 39.21560N, 105.39722W. Descend west following primitive but defined trail across Reservoir Gulch stream in about 0.25 miles, then follow a faint trail down to Lost Creek in about 0.6 miles. The Obscure Wall is visible across the creek. Wade the creek, and follow a climber’s trail to the base at approximately 8,800 feet. It is about 5.0 miles & 3.0 hours one-way, 1500 foot gain & 900 foot loss on the approach. GPS coordinates are: N 39.21068N, -105.4091W; the climbing aspect is SE. The approach via the Shafthouse is similar time and distance wise but requires some technical rock scrambling and routefinding from the Shafthouse down to Lost Creek, which can be time consuming if you are unfamiliar with the terrain. The benefit is that there is only a small creek crossing, and it is a more scenic approach.
