Description Suggest change

On the west-facing slope of Canaan Mountain, the drainage down from Keep Swamp forms several ice climbs when conditions are good. Upwards of 350 feet of vertical rise between the bottom of the flows and the top of the hill.

Access appears legal - within Housatonic State Forest, but just south of and outside of the restricted Canaan Mountain Natural Area Preserve at the top of the mountain.  Please try to not stray too far north and into the protected area.

There is a long history of ice climbing here, but I can’t personally speak for details of any individual routes. Can someone who does know fill in the details?

Getting There Suggest change

There’s a pull-off on the east side of Route 7 with room for several vehicles, 2.3 miles south of Route 44. Follow the faint hunter’s/climber’s trail roughly northeast for approximately 185 yards where you’ll reach a stream. Stay on the south side of the stream and follow the beaten path uphill to the base of the ice. Crampons recommended on the approach, it’s pretty steep (approximately 60 degrees).
