Description Suggest change

This stunning creek is known for it's trad and sport climbing (mostly trad). However, within the creek sits numerous scattered boulders waiting to scrubbed and climbed. All the rock is beautiful sandstone and the boulders span the spectrum of little turds to unique striated and wavy blocks. A great summer time spot to wrestle some pebbles then take a dip in the creek or go fishing. The main hiking area off the West Clear Creek trailhead gets a little busy, but just keep adventuring further and you can escape the crowds. A little bit of exploring has yielded some nice blocks so far. Much more to be done here!

Note...the locations of these boulders are currently vague. I have not gone back in some time to retrieve GPS coordinates. Happy hunting! Not a bad place to wander.

Getting There Suggest change

To get to this section of West Clear Creek (copied from 'West Clear Creek' main page):

GPS coordinates are N34 32.748, W111 26.015

From the south (Pine and Strawberry): Traveling north on AZ-87, take a left onto AZ-260, going west. Just after mile marker 249, take a right onto FR144. Drive to the T intersection (1.7 miles) and go left onto FR149, drive 1.1 miles and turn right onto FR142 at the triangle-shaped intersection. Drive 1 mile and turn left onto FR142E - after which you'll immediately cross a cattle guard. Drive approximately 3 miles until it ends at the trailhead.

From the north (Flagstaff and Winslow): Traveling south on AZ-87, take a right on to FR142, right at mile marker 285. Proceed on FR142 for 5 miles and—just after passing FR142F—take a right onto FR142E. Drive approximately 3 miles until it ends at the trailhead.

Hike the trail down into the canyon (about 20 minutes). Most of the routes are upstream. Again, please keep this area clean.

BOULDERING:

If entering from West Clear Creek trailhead head upstream in canyon. To access some areas, you will need to hike from FR142E and go east into the canyon before the trailhead.
