Description
Giant boulder field from an ancient landslide complex that damned the Sitkum Valley leaving a neat isolated valley in the middle of the Oregon Coast Range. Area has tons of potential for bouldering...with a little bit of moss removal. Boulders are composed of Tyee Sandstone, identical to material in the Callahans and Bear Ridge. Worthwhile place to explorer even if just wanting to take a scenic trip from Roseburg to Coos Bay.
Getting There
From Roseburg, make your way west to Melrose and out Flournoy Valley onto Old Coos Bay Wagon Road and follow the winding and scenic gravel road up and into the woods towards Sitkum. You'll pass along several waterfalls, neat old growth (the Doerner Fir is nearby), and eventually pass through the tiny community of Sitkum. As you exit the valley, look to your left and down towards the river at the boulder field. Take a left across the small bridge and park if you want to go check out the boulders down there. If in the mood to do some exploring, mob up the forest roads and you'll pass through clear cuts surrounded by mossy boulders for the next few miles.
There is an excellent vantage point at the Clearcut where you can glamp at the base of a highball boulder and wake up with the rising sun over the Sitkum Valley.
If wanting to do some further exploring of some cliffs, stay on the pavement for ~3 miles past the bridge to check out Split Mountain, part of the remaining headscarp from the ancient landslide that forms a prominent 400 ft north-facing cliff visible to the south from the Sitkum Valley. FYI, have a topo handy for Split Mountain because you'll need to hike in ~1/4 mile starting from the backside.
