Description Suggest change

The Lost Canyon area and its domes (Chalkboard, Surrealist, Cholla’s and Polychrome) are off the beaten path, and less than an hour approach to the first Dome (Chalkboard). It is home to some fine moderates, and some hard lines as well. These climbs are more modern, and therefore less heady perhaps that other Cochise climbs. The domes are visible from the Forest Circus campground at the end of Ironwood Rd., as well as from the trailhead.

Getting There Suggest change

Park on Ironwood Rd. just before the Forest Service campground, which is at the end of the road. The parking is obvious, as there is a large boulder that the road goes around. Head west on “the main trail” as for The Rockfellow Group. About 10-15 mins from the trailhead look sharp for a pictograph located on the roof of a boulder in a small “boulder cave”. Just after this, there are some steps cut into the rocks. A couple of hundred yards after this look sharp for The Lower Lost Canyon Trail splitting off to the left (South/SW). This should be only .25 miles or so from the TH. Take the Lost Canyon Trail as it winds uphill. Pass through and around some large boulders. The first major Dome you come to will be Chalkboard. From here, the trail continues onward SSW to Surrearlist Dome, Cholla’s Dome, and Polychrome Dome. Expect 45 minutes to Chalkboard, and over an hour to Polychrome. The Lower Lost Canyon Trail continues to loop around Polychrome going West and then North (and NE) to join the Upper Lost Canyon Trail (aka In the Shadows Trail), and this connects back to the main trail higher up (past the turnoff for Stronghold Dome, but before Waterfall Dome).
