Description
Known as the Devil's Horsepen and Devil's Den by the locals, the cliffs at Crystal Castle boast some of the best hard Sport Climbing in Vermont. The rock is a high-quality Gneiss, much like that of Farley. Climb on beautiful but daunting overhangs, impressive roofs, and thin faces with blocky holds and horizontal cracks. There is truly something for every type of climber here.
For the boulderers, there are some amazing highball ledge problems, some drop off problems, and a few classics down in the talus field below the Devil's Horsepen.
From mindat.org: This location was discovered during the depression while the CCC was building the forest road. Over the next seventy years, collectors discovered many of the finest alpine quartz specimens from North America here, making the Devil's Den a true classic locality.
Guidelines to follow here:
- Be respectful of other hikers, runners, and boulderers
- Don't disrupt the natural ecosystem (as with many areas, we want to preserve as much of it as possible)
- What you bring in, your bring out - NO LITTERING
- Be safe and have fun
