Description Suggest change

This black basalt rock face is the largest in the area and a stone's throw Northeast of Swimming Hole Rock. It's next to the Virgin River at a popular swimming hole with a rope swing on a cottonwood tree. It is up to 100 feet tall and routes are West to South facing. Therefore, morning shade and afternoon sun. Dreadfully hot in the summer until evening. Comfortable in the winter on sunny days. Easy top-rope access from above. Good area for family outings and teaching people/kids how to climb. Hopefully over time others will add routes. For now there is a single trad route with serious sport route potential. The rock faces tend to be blocky and loose and may require significant cleaning. The area is part of the Desert Reserve and currently any route development needs to be approved by the land managers. Further information regarding access for route development should be forthcoming soon. No shade directly at the crag, but there are some picnic tables and trees about 30 yds upstream. A much better and faster approach is from the end of W Center street. 37.201419, -113.283899. Pay attention to parking signs in the neighborhood.

Getting There Suggest change

The old confluence Park Trailhead is under construction and the only parking is far south on the other side of the bridge, or in a private lot for a coffee shop/restaurant. A faster and shorter approach is to park in the neighborhood of W Center St and S 560 West, and walk down the dirt road towards the river gorge. The sloped back side of the basalt rock will be directly in front of you once the dirt road splits.A 15 minute walk downstream along the Virgin River from the Confluence Park trailhead off of SR 9 immediately north of the Hurricane Bridge.
